Hey Everyone,

Yes, I know, gross. Maggots are fairly nasty. However, if there is one thing I have learned so far, it is "Do whatever you have to do to keep the Gliders stimulated and happy". So, I was curious, is it okay to feed farm bred maggots (like those from Grubco ) to Gliders? Has anyone tried this? I mostly ask because they seem to have superior nutritional values to most of the feeder insects out there.

[:"blue"]Fly larvae are just fine to feed gliders. In fact, if you look at some of the Australian glider sites, you will see that their diets call for fly larvae!! Only problem with fly larvae is that they morph and turn into flys in a short period of time.....much faster than mealies turn into beetles. I don't remember exactly; but it seems to me it is a week or two vs. several months for mealies. Either you must have the need to feed large quantities of larvae in a short time or you must purchase very small quantities which usually is not economical. [/]

Maggots are very nasty, but their fat content is low, and their calcium:phosphorous ratios are really good compared to the other insects on Grubco. They come in gigantic quantities, unfortunatley. But I might consider getting them every so often to feed to the Sugies.

One thing to consider; the farm raised maggots are far cleaner then the "trash can" maggots. Some hospitals buy farm raised maggots to "process" severe wounds; the maggots will only eat the dead flesh, and leave the clean, healthy flesh behind.

If there is a lot in one order, it is a good idea to find people to split it with. I do this for a lot of fish orders that I work with. Find other people in the area who want them, and share. Waste not, want not.

Yeah, I know quite a few Herp owners. I am sure they would appreciate a few for their hungry little guys.
