#425954 - 11/30/07 02:10 PM Joey is what?

Today i got my gliders out of there sleeping pouch and there was no joey in the pouch and there was a cry coming from the sleeping the joey is OOP..what now? I have not got him out of the sleeping i need to check on him? Or will he make it out of the sleeping pouch on his own? What should i expect? Thanks.

#425961 - 11/30/07 02:18 PM Re: Joey is what? [Re: ]

Awwww congrats! I just had my first Joey come OOP just over a week ago! Its so exciting! The joey will stay in the sleeping pouch and pretty much nurse and sleep. Mom or dad (at least one of them) should always be in the pouch with the joey to keep it warm. One will babysit while the other goes off to eat/play and then they switch. You should be able to tell the sex of the joey also. You can handle it (start out a few minutes at a time). Also, you may want to lower the pouch in the cage (make sure there is only one pouch so the joey doesnt get left alone by accident) or put a hammock under the pouch in case the joey falls out.

Here's a good place for some info:

And you know we want pictures!

Well at least one of the parents should be with the joey if he is newely oop. When the joey cries one should run back in there to take care of it. Keep a close eye and make sure it isn't left alone for too long. Check out Joey developement You can also get to Suz's website from there and find out what to do if the joey is rejected. Praying it isn't. Are mom and dad first time parents? How old are they? If they are young they may not know what to do. Someone will be along shortly to offer more help.

#425969 - 11/30/07 02:23 PM Re: Joey is what? [Re: ]

Yes first time parents...I had a pair..the girl died and i bought another pair with a fixed male, and the old boy and new girl mated...they are all between about a year old...

You can wait until he is out of the pouch. Are the parents bonded to you?

#425971 - 11/30/07 02:25 PM Re: Joey is what? [Re: ]

Well Mom is good with me but the dad is hyper...he loves me but is a biter sometimes...thats why im not trying to put my hand down there when he already seems not happy about it

#425975 - 11/30/07 02:28 PM Re: Joey is what? [Re: ]

I would wait till later tonight when he comes out of the pouch to go out eat/play. Then take the joey out.

Congrats on the new baby, Zack! Watching the parents interacting with him/her is FASCINATING! And it's amusing how Daddy is giving you "smack" for messing with his new baby! (I take it that you haven't had your pair for very long? And this is their first baby?)

Each parent acts differently with each baby that arrives, so I'll use some "generally" do/don't do guidelines:

It will help the JOEY to begin interacting with you as soon as you can (and as soon as the parents will let you). You'll want to have a little 3" x 3" square of fleece to hold the baby in for warmth purposes while you start your BRIEF visits (2-3 minutes tops until eyes open). It will help bonding with the PARENTS as well if you invite them to join you as well. But don't be surprised if they put their bodies between your eyes & the joey in your hands: this is their way of "protecting" the baby. And when you put little one back in the pouch, a parent will follow your hand right in & give baby the "once-over". But it WILL benefit the joey to watch & make sure he/she is getting enough nutrition from Mom. (make sure SHE is getting enough food & maybe some EXTRA yogurt treats or mealies, whichever)

If you EVER see the joey outside the pouch alone, crying, GET ONLINE TO SUGARGLIDER SUZ IMMEDIATELY!!! She's our "resident specialist" on joey problems & doesn't mind calls at ANY hour of the day or night (I believe her contact phone # is under the "Emergency" Tab).

Again, congrats! We LOVE "family" pictures whenever you get a chance!

Minkasmom has given you some excellent advice. Just make sure that the joey is getting fed. The next few days will be critical in keeping the joey hydrated. If you notice any signs of rejection at all....Please call Suz here are her phone numbers:

I just wanted to add here that one parent is usually with the joey (even when first out of pouch). Both of my pairs left their joeys on their first nights out and none were ever rejected. Just make sure that the joey is not cold or left for extended periods of time.

Also, if one or both parent does not come running when you put the joey back in, make sure you put the joey on one of the parents back (don't let go until you know they have each other). I always put my joeys on dad because mom had to be with them so much anyway, but I digress...The reason for doing this is so mom or dad will go back to the pouch and settle them in. If you just set the joey back in the sleeping pouch by themselves, you may find the joey wandering toward the pouch opening (if mom and dad haven't noticed them yet).
