#43460 - 04/15/05 06:11 PM Constant Crabbing, no apperent point?

All right hello every one, I have two gliders one male and one female. There both between 4 and 5 years old. I have had the male just about 3 months and the female about 4 years. The female didn't really trust or bond with me until the last year and a half, I really had a hard time. I don't know what was wrong but now she is very sweet. The male and I are still working on a strong bond, he is very calm and easily handled with a very nice temperament. I has NEVER heard him crab when he has been out with me or at all that I can think of? My female I have heard crab quite a bit when I first got her and when there is a breeze.

Now with all that said you can get a vague picture of my gliders.

So, Last night I was woke up 3 or 4 times in the night by one of them crabbing very loud! I got up the first 3 times, switched on the light and looked at them. Nothing was wrong? By the third time I thought maybe something was wrong and that they might fight so I added another pouch so the could sleep separate if needed. In the morning before I left I checked on them and they were both in the same pouch, because I had to leave them I separated them into different cages. I intend to put them back tonight. But can't think any reason why they where crabbing can any one think of a reason. I know they crab, but this was loud and sharp, like I have never heard?

Is it possible that my female is pregnant and its her getting agitated easily? There both fine right now I checked the both over no missing fur or fight marks??????

I really everyone for any help possible. I just am dumbfounded right now. Its one of those first things that kind of scares you and makes you question everything.

Thanks,
Crash Yim

Hi and Welcome to GC!... I dont actually ahve gliders yet but I know that there are many reasons that they crab. if you male is not neutered it is possible they were mating, also it would be possible that your male was trying to mate and your female was trying to fight him off. another thing you might want to look into is self mutilation... from what you explained i dont think that this is the cause but from what i hear if you have a male that is SMing he will make very loud sharp terrifying crabbing noises... so you may want to give him a thorough look over and check his umm "member" if you see it out. hope this helps, I'm sure someone will come along with a more educated guess, good luck.

Ahhh... Yes, I too have heard alike. However, as I did mention I checked both of the over very thoroughly. I would also like to add that the noise only accrued when they where together? I don't know if this means anything else?

I will try to record the noice later.

What you are describing is so typical of pairs when they are mating...they get very noisy and it usually lasts 24hrs. Did they come out and play during that time at all, or mainly stay put in the pouch? If they were staying put...it most likely was a mating night <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />.

Yes, I do believe they where mostly in the pouch or at least 2/3 times they where. Is the crabbing ok? I mean will anyone get hurt physically?

Thanks

Mating can sometimes be rough/violent...sometimes the females will get bite marks, but this is rare. If a small bald spot apears on the back of her neck, it's mating! Don't be overly concerned about the bald spot. This is from the male 'latching on' to the back of her neck during breeding. Lack of a bald spot does not mean lack of breeding. If the spot becomes red or inflamed, or there is a wound, take her to the vet and get advice from owners wiser then me...Try to avoid seperating them..keep an eye on them when they crab, but unless there are actual injuries, you shouldn't have to worry.
