Funny topic, hm? Anyway..I've had my gliders for four weeks now. My male is pretty bonded to me already, my female has gotten to the point that she really trusts me...ever since I first got my male, he's had this thing about armpits...at first, he wouldn't only bite my friend's armpits. I thought it was because my friend wears alot of cologne and deoderant. When he gets in there, he can not be detoured. Blowing on him, hissing at him, nothing works. Taking the bite doesn't help because he won't stop.
He's only done this to me a couple of times...well, last night, he was on my back, stuck his head in my arm pit and just started biting. I blew on him, hissed at him, he didn't care. It was a vicious 'I will kill you!' bite. I eventualy had to pry him off of me, but he jumped back to me and went straight back to my armpit. I went and took a shower and changed my clothes. He still bit my armpit. I have about 60 little bite marks now and they all bled. He isn't doing it to be mean, because he doesn't bite me other wise and was playing with me fine all night...but if he gets one wiff of an armpit, it's attack glider mode!
Has anyone else had this problem?? How can I get him to stop?? Ignoring it is NOT an option since he would do it all day, and I really can't take it anymore

LOL, read the thread title, and had to read man. haha. I haven't had a prob with my gliders biting my armpits, but they do like to occasionally bitethe skin between my thumb and pointer finger, you know, its just kinda chubby and there so they kinda just go for it. Might be the same kind of thing with the armpit. theres just kind of looseskin there... completely biteable. I dunno what to suggest though..... does he bit even through a shirt?

well...I don't really have any chubby bitable skin...I only weight 80 lbs..*laughs* but he'll bite through a shirt. Through a jacket even. And it's not just "Hey, this feels cool, I'm gonna bite it." He's all out attacking. Clawing, biting, throwing his head around like he's wrestling with an anaconda...it's like he acts with a feather toy.

i would train him to stay in a pouch around your neck as u no gliders dont like strong smells and most people use deodorant on their underarms i would not put him on you if he were mine. just play with him on the floor and when he jumps on you take him away from that area.

gliders angel...um...I don't stink...lmao he does it even after I have taken a shower. And does not bite any other part of my body...to keep him from jumping on me seems kind of mean since he really does enjoy my company and likes to play with me.

Yes, keeping him completely off you does sound rather mean, especially seeing as how we love to have personal contact while playing with our furballs.

Just try to keep him from that particular spot, which I know you are already doing, and you may also consider putting some padding under your shirt right there so that way when he does bite down, he wont get to your skin!

I am so glad you posted this! My Jasper does this too! It hurts like the dickens! I don't know how to avoid it but I sure hope somebody comes up with an answer soon!

Ouch!
I am wondering if it could be the type of deodorant you are using? I know that I once used a different type shampoo and they all attacked my hair. I had to stop using it.
This type of biting is usually is for a reason.(certain smells, puberty, feeling theatened, ect.)
Gabriel once bit me really severly, over 20 times in about 30 seconds and I ended up prying open his mouth to get him to let go. The reason that I beleve he did this was that I had been handling other males earlier in the day. He was with someone else and when they walked by and he jumped on me when I wasn't expecting it. That was all she wrote, he just started attacking me.
I made myself handle him everyday, no matter what. It was rough for him going through puberty and he was quite aggressive, it got so no one else could handle him at all. If he even saw me give another glider attention he would get angry, so I had to keep him away from any other cages where he couldn't see what was going on. I would have to shower and change clothes before I could even touch him, so I would take him out first thing in the morning. He was my first rejected joey and we started taking care of him at 21 days out of pouch. Little stinker is now back to being my little sweet boy now thank goodness.
Even if he bites, you have to handle him or you will never break him of this and his behavior will possibly get worse as he may not be as bonded to you. I would recommend wearing a thin jacket or something that would protect your armpits from further bites. If he starts to bite I would give him a firm "NO" and redirect him. (such as giving him a feather or small toy to play with) If he returns to biting, repeat the "NO" and redirection. It may take some time to make progress if this is a habit with him now, but I beleive it can be done. Gliders are alot like 2 year old human kids, lol. They need lots of direction and TLC. Keep us updated on how you are doing with him.

Not to be gross but here's an idea:

Put an extra piece of fleece blanket in their sleeping hut/pouch for a day or two. Then, before you handle him, take the fleece out of their pouch and rub it on the armpit region of your shirt. Then replace it in the sleeping area.

This SHOULD do two things. One, it'll put some of his familiar smell on you in that area and should help to keep him from biting. Two, it'll put some of your smell on the fleece that he will be using for bedding and get him used to it. Eventually I'd think you wouldn't need to do anything.

I was just thinking of the opposite--maybe wear some fleece under your arms for a few hours, and put it in his pouch while he's sleeping. Maybe that will get him used to the smell. Then when you take him out to play at night, you could do what fjeastman suggested, and rub something with his smell under your arms. Maybe he had a bad experience with armpits, who knows? When my son drinks his bottle at night, his hand Has to be playing with my armpit before he falls asleep. Something about them! Anyways, try everything with your glider, and please let us know if anything works! Good luck with the little guy:o)
