Tonight I had a huge scare, and I'm still shaking when I think about a hundred ways this could have been worse... which is why its a miracle to me.
Earlier my brother and I were filming Sprite and Dart, and got called down for dinner. We put them in the cage and went downstairs without a second thought. Then a movie came on... then we had a fireplace fire... so that we didn't get back upstairs anytime soon.
Then, suddenly, right in the middle of the movie I suddenly felt the urge to go check on a game I had left running. So I went upstairs, paused it, and got some homework. When I stepped out of my room, a little rat-like shape darted across my path, and for a confused moment I thought I was hallucinating. Then, I dropped my pencil, and picked it up... and when I bent down, saw my little Dart shivering and looking terrified. He was practically completely wet, sneezing, and just plain pitiful. I paniced and ran into my brother's room to check the cage, and sure enough we had left it open!
I checked in the bathroom, and here was water all over the floor and around the tiolet's general area. Dart had somehow fallen in the toilet, and gotten out! I don't know how, but my little guy managed to escape such a horrible death!
I feel horrible, because if Sprite had followed him out of the cage, her joeys and certainly her as well would have all drowned. If I hadn't have picked up my pencil, I would still be downstairs oblivious... and Sprite could have gotten loose, and Dart even more lost. He could have frozen to death if he had wandered in my room trying to find me, because my room can get very cold, and he was wet! So many things could have gone wrong, and I think it's truly a miracle that he actually escaped from the toilet. I think I was shaking harder than he was when I realized that he could be gone right now... my little Dart. He's always been a miracle glider, and now he's proved himself yet again.
From now on I'm going to double check both the cage latch and the toilet lid. We had gotten far to lax, and apparently very lucky as well.
This might be a pointless post, but please, let it be a reminder that you can never get even a little careless with your babies... <img border="0" alt="
