#47550 - 05/29/05 12:57 PM cats = scared gliders?

I have several cats in my home. I have put my sugar gliders in my den, with their cage up on a stand (about 3 feet off the floor.) My cats are very curious (and maybe a little hungry?) but I have made sure that they can't get at the gliders. How can I be sure my gliders aren't scared and stressed? They don't seem worried, but I haven't been around them in the middle of the night. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/worried2.gif" alt="" />

We have 5 cats at home, and it took about a week for everyone to just get over their curiosity. Now our one cat sleeps on top of the cage cover and the other just watch when the gliders get really going. Mine are declared so I know no paw will hurt the gliders, and when they crab they scare the cats away. I would just keep an eye out and see how they react to each other. The Gliders will let you know if they are too stresed.

You could just keep the cats out of the room.

We have two declawed cats too, and for the longest time I had the cage on the floor, I just recently put the cage about 1.5 feet up off the ground. One of our cats gets right up to the and sniffs them and touches noses with them, the other one just ignores them.... Gizmo&Suchi's mom gave you some good advice.... I'd just keep an eye out and see how they do. They'll probably become disinterested pretty wuickly.

My 4 cats understand that my gliders are NOT toys or food! Strange as it may sound, I've TOLD the cats repeatedly that chasing them or pestering then in any fashion is NOT ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR! (I picture in my mind the vision of a cat sticking a paw into the cage or running after a suggie, with a LOT of negative feelings toward the cat if they do this....kinda like the Pet Psychic [a little psycho? maybe, but it's worked!]) I also let the cats into the "Glider-torium" (their own special room) during the day when the suggies are sleeping, and they're shoo'd out when the gliders wake up at night. Granted, there have been times when a feline snuck into the room while the gliders were OUTSIDE their cage, but I've been lucky in that the gliders ran for the "high spots" & the cat just sat there & watched. I probably spazzed out worse then the gliders did, but it's not something I ALLOW ON A REGULAR BASIS.

Your suggies will display their distress by either crabbing or barking...if that happens, show the cats the way OUT of the room!

My gliders have never minded cats in the least and for the most part, cats haven't been very interested in the gliders either.

My mom's dog is terrified of my gliders and won't be in the same room as them, even if they are in their pouch...

My glider is kept in a room away from cats and dogs, however I would suggest keeping a squirt bottle handy. My first glider was in a room with cats and dogs and wasn't bothered unless the cat was right up to the cage. After a few tries with the squirt bottle both cats and dogs learned not to go near the cage. Their bark or crab is loud enough that is scares my guys! hehe

I like the idea of a water bottle, I don't think my cats would appreciate that too much. (and it's not crazy to talk to your cats, i have conversations with my dog that my boyfriend teases me about all the time) One of my cats has already been bitten on the nose by a glider. I think I'll just try them in the same room, and if it gets too bad just move them again. Thanks for the help!

cats do not always equal scared gliders. Both Zathras and Chewy had no problems with our 4 cats. They were curious for a short time. Two of my cats fight over who gets to sleep on top of the cage.

The gliders just go about their lives and show no behavior differences between cats present and cats absent. Our most agressive/jealous cat Igamu did take one swipe at Zathras. Zath responded with a very short but loud crabb and Igamu backed off imediately. When Zath was very young he jumped off me and landed fully spread on Catzilla's face. I was terrified but Catzilla just let him crawl over his face and down his back.

I have no cat/suggie problems but that does not mean I do not watch them constantly during OOC time.
