Well.. a bitter-sweet move is looking to be in my near future.. within the next 4 months at the longest. We put in an offer on a house last night and should know if our offer is accepted within 24 to 72 hours.. but the bank isn't open on Monday so it will be within the next week. If it goes through we will be moving within 45 days..

I have never moved with gliders. I can't see it being much different than taking them on a trip but at the same time I cannot help but worry about them and the possible stress that they may endure.

It's not a long distance move but it's still going to be a new environment.

Do I need to do anything special for them? Should I not wash their cages or pouches before the move and wait to do so until about a week after?

Any tips? dunno

im not experienced with moving with gliders but i think u should leave there smell in the cage, i wouldnt wash their pouches, because there are going to be a lot of new smells, and i think it would help comfort them

I, too, need tips. I am going to look at a house tomorrow that I hope works out (I hate house searching, and the landlord has already approved all my animals). It's only about 10 minutes away, but like Linda said, it's a new place. I hopefully will be moving in the next 2-4 months.

smile Thanks.. more tips are welcomed. I figure that I will schedule it so that I won't have to clean their cages for at least 4-7 days after the move.. or maybe I can fudge it and do simple wipe downs and trays only.. until they seem settled.

Emily, GOOD LUCK! We are hoping that ours works out too. I am soooooo tired of looking at houses. lol

I have moved with my babies and never had a problem. I put them in pouches according to their colonies and set the cages up (without washing pouches etc) and put the cages in an area that most resembled where they had been living. I never had stress issues or anything. I made sure that for the first day they had peace, then for the next couple of days I gave them a little extra tent time and cuddle moments. I also carried them (separately) around the house in my bra so they could get used to the sounds and smells.

I would let the stay in "dirty" pouches and cages for a few days after the move, like you said. Move during the day, keep them in travel cage while you're driving to the new place, bring snacks and water if it's kinda far away.

I'm sure it'll go fine (or at least better than mine, imagine moving gliders in pouches at 11:30 PM after a trip to the hospital shakehead )

Linda, we should be moving soon too. Our offer was accepted, now we're waiting on the inspections and appraisal to check out. We'd be closing around the middle of March and hopefully moved in by the end of March. We'll have 2 more months on our lease (so we have to see what our landlord wants to do about that).
I'm planning on cleaning their cage a few days before I move them, let them settle in for a few days, then start cleaning the cage and accessories (alternating of course) until everything is clean. We're only moving about 30 minutes away.

We just moved back in November of last year. I cleaned my suggies cage, but left the pouches and toys alone till I felt they were settled in. My suggies never seemed to have a problem with it. smile

Good luck with getting the house. I know how exhausting that can be. I hope you get it! jump

Congratulations on the new house!! It looks fantastic!!

As far as moving with gliders, watch their weight. When I moved with my gliders one of them took a while to settle in and actually dropped about 15 grams, either from nerves or not eating enough or a combination of both. He was perfectly healthy otherwise, just uneasy with the new environment. He was not a big glider to begin with so the weight loss was obvious. Periodically, I weigh my gliders on a postal scale. The same thing happened to him when I put a new floor fan near his cage and it was turned on at night.

I actually HAD to move at midnite of New Years Eve.. and ALL of the gliders were awake and it was COLD.. there was no way i could get them into a pouch, so i covered their travel cage that they were living in the past two days (to make it "home") with 5 fleece blankets and carried it down the stairs into a car that was already warming for 20 mins. when we got there, the house was already warm because we had just moved the furniture (we did the animals last) and just shuttled them into the house.

I never broke down the cage or anything, just popped in into the back of the suv everything in tact and then brought them into the house. They moved into the big cage that night with no issues because i didn't clean it or anything.. And had no had ONE problem.

I do have to say i was worried though.. but everything went VERY VERY well.. I would not worry too mcuh.. they hardly knew they were in a new place because their smells were stll there.

how far are you moving?

I have also moved with my gliders. I didn't wash their pouches or cage for a while before or after the move, and everything went smoothly. smile I don't think you'll have a big problem.
