no, i dont think so..a friend said its not good for animals because everything taken out of the water..its like WFI water..

I used to work in a R&D lab in a paper mill and we used to distill water for paper testing. Distilled water has everything taken out, making it UNSAFE for human and animal consumption alike.

We use Spring Water for our gliders. But then again the nitrates are so high in the water where we live. We even get a warning from our water company. That the water is not safe for kids under 1 yr. old. An might not be safe for small animals. So thats why we use Spring water.

Ok, thanks. laugh I've been giving mine Spring Water but my dad said yesterday that you have no idea what's in Spring Water and that I should be giving them distilled water. He wanted to distill my whole galon of Spring but I told him not to until I found out for sure. >.<

Distilled water IS safe for human and animal consumption. It has had all of the minerals and such removed, but you get all that you need from the foods you eat.
My husband is prone to kidney stones, so the doc recommended he drink distilled water, also stating that he had the same problem and that was what he drinks.
I always give my gliders distilled water as well as my family. There is no harmful chlorination, or heavy mineral deposits.

It's my understanding that distilled water is extremely clean... so yes it is safe. I've never heard that it is unsafe for human and glider consumption.

It's clean water, but it's stripped of the good things in it too. I use bottled spring water.

Distilled water is very safe for animals and humans alike.

I would think that bottled or purified water of any kind would safe for animal and human consumption. The only water source I would really be concerned with would be tap water. Depending on where you live there can be large amounts of chemicals added to the water as well as heavy mineral deposits. In our area it is more common for people to develop kidney stones and at younger ages due to the high lime and calcium content in our tap water. Because my husband has already had 2 kidney stones at the age of 25 yrs, we buy only distilled water and do not use city water for drinking.
I think I read somewhere that the chlorine used in tap water isn't good for gliders.

Hmmm...so distilled water is alright then? I want to stick with Spring Water but then, you have no idea where it came from. I could fill a gallon up and say it's Spring Water when it really isn't. dunno

We're on well water that's heavy on lime. >.< But, we give it to the dogs and birds and they're fine...I'd never give it to the sugs though.

i wish i could find the thread, but there was a general consensus that distilled water WAS NOT safe for sugar gliders and SHOULD NOT be used, however filtered water and reverse osmosis water wasok to use

please dont give you glider distilled water untill you know more about it.. maybe call your vet, becayse everything i have been told was to not offer it to small animals

I remember the thread LindsayAnnG's talking about, I think. If I remember correctly, distilled water is not good b/c it's so pure that it can actually cause nutrients to be pulled from the body if it's intaken as the body's primary hydration source. I can't explain it, that's just what I remember LOL! I feed my sug's bottled drinking water. HTH!


Edit: I did a little lookin' online to see what I could find on this topic. Seemed to find mostly mixed reviews - I guess the world may never REALLY know!

ok.. so this is what i found.. the traditional way to distill water was to boil it, collect the steam, and then condense it to water again.. this way all fo the minerals are now left in the container andthe water is "pure"

The way they do it NOW.. the "quick" and mass production way is the chemically distill it. By chemically distilling it they use a resin base that changes the ION content in it..and water the is just slightly over distilled can actually be COROSIVE

Right now, i dont know how changing the ion content makes it into pure water, BUT the fact that changint he ions makes water more corosive is a little scarey

I guess we'll never know! I still don't think distilled water is alright so I don't think I'm going to bother checking. (Yaaaa...I'm lazy) As a kid, I was always told that distilled water is bad if you drink a lot of it because it has no minerals so I think I'm just going to stick with that. If I was told not to drink it as a kid, I can only imagine what it would do to suggies. Better to be safe than sorry, ya?

My dad has a distiller downstairs for when he makes his alcohol. :S 1 gallon of Spring Water is actually fairly cheap though and lasts a while.

i agree.. why buy distilled since it is SO much more expensive, and spring and filtered water is still good for them

wow.. that first article is quite amazing.. i didn't think it was THAT absolbant.. so now, just imagine putting it into a plastic container with a metal spout.. that CAN NOT be good, it will just absorb anything that the plastic and metal puts out.. and YES plastic puts out harmful particles, because it does break down over time, but its never really absorbed by our water..

and the fact that is absorbs CO2!!! And it becomes acidic!! No way.. i wouldnt use it for ANY anima;l

Yep, that is what I am trying to say, that the distilled water is unsafe for human and animal comsumption.

We used alot of distilled water for paper testing when I worked there as a R&D lab technician. We needed the water to be stripped of all minerals and whatnot so we could get the best results from the paper testing. We even had our own water distiller and it was awful! I never tried it but knew it was BAD.
