#507931 - 03/19/08 12:58 PM Can they be left alone for a weekend???

HI
I am new here and also to the world of Sugar Gliders. WE have had ours since December and just love him! My question is it possible to leave them for a weekend when we go away for the holiday? Is there a mix of food I could leave to sustain him. We could possibly have someone come in and feed him but he tends to get out of his cage as soon as the door is opening and we are more afraid he will get away and someone not familiar with him would not be able to get him back into his cage. With 4 cats its a real worry! Is it safe to leave him for the weekend? The person we received him from did say she left him on some weekends but I wasn't sure. Thanks for any info Belinda ( and Dimietrie)

You definately can't leave him with just food and water like a cat-timer dish. shakehead You're going to need to find someone that's familiar with him, like a friend that has come over and played with him that may know what to do if he runs away, to watch him. Can you not just take him?

Have someone come over to feed him while he is asleep during the day. I'm assuming he sleeps during the day. =]

No, you can not even leave them for one night. They need fresh food and water daily. And if they are used to having out of cage time that also needs to be done. They can get very stressed easily. So you will need to take him with you or like Amanda said have someone who knows about them come over.

Sugar Gliders need fresh fruits, veggies, water, and diet everynight. They can not be left alone for a weekend. Do you have neighbors, friends, or family that can come over while your gone? smile

I agree with everyone else's replies. Sugar gliders are not the type of pet that should be left unattended. There are to many things that can go wrong and with these little ones time is of the essence.
Here is a link to a great web site to where you might be able to find someone near you who would be willing to come in and take care of your babies.
If not thru there you can check out our State Roll Call forum and see if there is anyone from here who lives nearby.

Please have someone pet sit or take him with you. If he were to get hurt or sick, he could end up self mutilating. Something as simple as a water bottle that stops working, could mean death to these little ones. It's never a good idea to leave them unattended for a long period of time.

Just a point of info:
I went on "Vacation" a few years ago. FINALLY was going to get away for just 4 days. I had a friend that new nothing about gliders except for meeting mine and me telling him about them. He said he would feed them for me in the evening (I gave him the whole lowdown on what I feed) and take any left over food out in the mornings. Simple enough plan. I had "All the bases covered", or so I thought. Since my friend would not be there when the gliders woke up he was never able to do a head count. I was "POSITIVE" that they could not get out of the cage and I took extra precautions for that. Turns out one of the gliders, my little Fivel, my little buddy, got out of the cage somehow and could not get back in. I DID NOT take this scenario into consideration and it cost Fivel his life. When I got home and saw he was missing I FRANTICALLY began a search of the room. I found my little buddy on top of a cloths rack balled up under a article of clothing like he was sleeping. For one instant I was so relieved until I picked up his cold lifeless little body.He had died from no food and water. I WAS DEVASTATED, and in a way I still am. His life was MY responsibility. All of our gliders live's are our responsibility. This TORE my heart out and to this day I do not forgive myself for what happened, and I just don't leave them anymore.
If you leave them in the care of anyone make sure that there is also some kind of food, and defiantly water, left outside the cage in case this should ever happen. It was a hard lesson learned and I hope I can spare anyone the AGONY of this ever happening.
Pat
R.I.P Fivel Buddy. I am so sorry

Oh yea, the collapsible dog kennels make wonderful travel cages. They're small, lightweight and VERY portable. You can even buy them completely customized just for suggies.

I wouldn't leave them alone for the whole weekend, but I have left mine for one day and they were just FINE when I came back home. I just made their food before I left and when we got back the next day they were both okay.

Belinda, there are many of us here that would be happy to glidersit for a weekend for you. Where are you located? I wouldn't mind watching your babies but would need a health certificate from your vet.

In the past before we moved here my vet would actually pet sit for us for a very nominal fee. It was wonderful--he even cleaned the cages for us when we were on vacation!

Since we have moved things have changed though. Now we have a couple who lives near us come in during the early evening and feed the animals for us. I pre-portion all the glider food and leave it in the freezer in ziplock bags for them. All they have to do it take the old dish out and put the new dish in with the food. They always peek in the pouch to make sure everyone looks okay. They are left with our cell phone numbers, vet numbers, etc in case of emergency.

There are pet sitting services that may be available in your area that could come in and help. Just be sure to check to see if they have any experience with sugar gliders and if not see if they are willing to learn!

pat.. i am so sorry! that just broke my heart, i could just feel your hurt through your words! i can't even imagine having that happen. thank you so much for sharing that. maybe this will indeed keep someone from having a situation with their suggie(s) that would be harmful or fatal. {{{hugs}}}

I know most of you do not like pet stores but we visit one exotic pet store here a lot and we like one of the girls who works there...she has had suggies before and is wonderful. We asked her to sit for us when we were gone and it was great. We call her the glider Whisperer...you might try getting to know someone at your vet who knows how to handle them or someone from an exotic pet store...Just a thought.

where did you get the gliders from? Sometimes a small scale breeder would be willing to babysit for their customers or know of someone in your area that could.

I have been glidersitting a pair of twin sisters for AliaBrown for a week now. Alia went on vacation and she would not trust anyone but me to glidersit for her, as the girls were once our joeys. You might have some better luck in asking your breeder to glidersit for you.

Ozzi, I am so sorry about your Fivel. hug2

Leaving your gliders unattended for 4 days is like leaving dogs unattended with no food and water. In many ways gliders are a lot like dogs, they demand attention and supervision.

The sad truth, and the toughest lesson of my life. Even though there was someone that came in and fed them there is just way too much that can go wrong during the course of just one day. At least sharing this will hopefully prevent anything like this from happening to anyone else. Any of you "I have to get a Sugar Glider" people reading this out there, read well. There is A LOT involved in owning Gliders, and a tremendous amount of responsibility. When you think you have covered all the bases, think again agree

I just bring my gliders with me when I travel. I bought the pop up kennel from walmart, it was 15-20$. (I don't remember exactly how much) but it folds right up. I have an extra wheel and some toys I keep packed in a bag with it. I feed mine the darcy's diet, so I grab a bottle of ensure and when I get where I'm going I buy a small bag of veggies and some fruit. The only time I haven't traveled with them is when I've flown somewhere, then I have someone who keeps them at their house for me, in their pop up travel cage. They are fairly easy to travel with, that might be an option for you rather than taking chances on someone else, or leaving them alone, which they would more than likely not survive. Good luck! you've gotten some wonderful ideas on finding someone to glider-sit for you.
