So this may be a silly question but recent conversations with people have me doubting my curent understanding of the leucistic gene.....If we have a leu male with a 100%leu het female and they have a non-leu baby....the baby is then a 100% leu het with the father's leu line, correct? Since it is not a leu, the mother's leu line is not expressed and should not figure into the equation when trying to determine compatability of the joey with other gliders or am I mistaken on this?
Thanks in advance to all those who can help.....

Yes, If one parent is a leu the joeys will be 100% het.

Leu father x 100% Leu Het mother = 100% Leu Het offspring.

Both Parents have contributed their Genetic makeup to their offspring.

Thus... one must compair the linage of Both Parents of the offspring produced when breeding.

If mom has any Leu in her then her lineage is also an important factor since you have to have two gliders with the leu gene to produce leu's or leu hets.

Cindy, that's not true - you can get hets if you pair a leu and a gray (you'd still get 100% leu hets wink )

Oh geesh...I have no idea what i was thinking...I am off to the dr in 15 minutes for a sinus infection..it must be fogging my brain, now that I read what I typed I goofed! blush lol For some reason I was trying to say that you needed both to carry the leu gene to have leu's, not just one like a wf so both parents lineage is important.

But since the father only has leu to pass on, if the baby is not leucistic then the mother's leu line is not expressed and should not be a consideration.
For instance, if the boy is blue and the girl red

Daddy=ll
Mommy=Ll
The pairings would be:
l L
l l
l L
l l
In the cases where the baby is not leucistic, there is no materal leucistic component

BUT there the leu gene is not the only consideration. Mom still contributed half of the genetic makeup, so the rest of the genes are still a concern if breeding too close. wink

We understand the need to breed out the line in terms of other genetic consideration, but we were confused regarding the leu component....

A 100% Leu Het does carry one copy of the Leu gene along with the Dominant color gene.

BEW carries one copy of the Leu Gene. No other gene for coloration does it possess unless it is also a Het for another varriation. Only when Proven is the BEW called a Double Het.

When paired together the BEW gives his copy of the Leu gene to his offspring. The 100% Leu Het then will either give one copy of the Leu gene to produce a BEW or a copy of the Dominant gene for Dominant color which then are Het to Leucistic.

When breeding it is important to know the genetic background of Both Parents as both contribute to the offsprings gene pool no matter what the breeder is breeding for.
