#52917 - 08/04/05 08:54 AM Emma didn't make it.

Many of you know that I have been treating Emma for something that appeared to be a bacterial infection. She was appearing to improve and had begun eating on her own again. But this morning when I went to give her her medicine I found her seizing.
I took her to the vet where she began seizing again while I was waiting to see the vet. Just as they came to call me back she stopped moving. They put her on oxygen as there was still a heart beat but she wasn't breathing and died a couple minutes later.
I have her scheduled for necropsy and will know the results the middle of next week.

Emma, I will miss you very much. You taught me a lot about gliders and I hope that you can share much in death as well. I love you and I always will. Good-bye.

Basically it appears that there was damage to both the liver and the kidneys. She had fatty liver disease which is caused by anorexia in an overweight animal. It is often seen in cats. I have requested this info in hard copy once the vet has all the information available to her. And my husband is going to make a pdf version of it for me to post here for all of you who wish to have detailed info.
I also plan to put what I can into the death database.
I have never heard of this fatty liver disease before nor how to prevent it. The vet said once it has begun there isn't much you can do about it.

I was just about to post in your other thread when I saw it was closed and you had posted here. My guess is that there was still infection in the wound (it's easy to miss, since they can scab over so quickly), and the infection becomes systemic. I had this happen with a glider.

Thank you for having the necropsy. We can all learn from it, and I hope you'll post the results.

I just want you to know that I'm so sorry you lost Emma, and I know you've got to be feeling incredible pain and shock right now. My thoughts are with you --

I'm so sorry you're having to go through this. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> She is where her infection can't hurt her anymore. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frostyangel.gif" alt="" />

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the words of comfort and the hugs. I am working on a scrap book in memory of Emma. I had to take the day off of work due to crying everytime I tried to speak. Thankfully the people I work with were very understanding and allowed me the day off without any trouble.
I want to ask you all to pray for my other kiddos too. Friday night Playto had a seisure and then she had another one Saturday morning. I am working with my vet to figure out what is causing this and we are treating her as agressively as we can.
I should know the results of Emma's necropsy by Wednesday and will post the results. I do know currently from the gross necropsy that there was liver damage. Hopefully the tissue tests will give us some answers.
Again thanks for your kind words.

Thanks for all of your support during this time. My vets office sent me a sympathy card that everyone in the office signed. It was really nice.
