hello all,
lily seems to have a problem that despite plenty of tests and meds keeps coming back.
about every 2 months lily will wake up early (this is the tip off that something is wrong) and before she eats she throws up. it's mainly dry heaves because her stomach is empty. she dry heaves for about a minute and then runs around her cage clearly a little scared and upset. the first time this happened she got diarrhea also and became dehydrated. after the vomiting episode she didn't eat much at all and wouldn't drink much.) the vet did an x ray, blood tests, and fecal. nothing showed up. so he put her on 2 antibiotics, a pro-motility drug (to keep her digestive track regulated) and also a calcium supplement (for good measure.) this cleared up the problem. it happened again 3 months later (with no diarrhea because i caught it early), this time a fecal was done, no bacterial infection was found (like last time) and they put her on the same course of meds. cleared up within a day of beginning meds. now it's two months later and she just woke up vomiting. i have the meds on hand and just gave her the first dose. i know a course of meds will clear it up but i'm frustrated by this problem because no one can seem to figure out what is causing it.
anybody experience anything like this or have any suggestions on what could be causing it?
i have lily on the recommended bml diet and she's healthy and happy otherwise.
any help would really be appreciated.

Heather,

I'm sorry the lil one and you are having to endure this. I couldn't find anything that was exactly like the symptoms you are describing, but here is what I have found. Sorry I couldn't help more. Hopefully someone will be able to.

Hmmm this is a tough one, no bacteria found .. well i know this much a freezer can have bacteria in it and nasty ones to boot !! Maybe try puting the BML ice-cube trays in plastic bags ? I might not be making a lot of sense there but i think this is food related somehow ? Check the ingredients for BML make sure none of the ingredients are bad or stored wrong !
Lastly people have gotten salmonella poisening from vegetables or salads that were precut and packaged .. <img border="0" alt="dunno" title="" src="graemlins/nixweiss.gif" /> AlL these are just ideas that came to mind !! Maybe it leads to something !!I sure wish i could help more !!

Has your vet checked her urine by chance?

Also, storing unused meds and then using them later....not wise unless vet says they will keep. Most have a expiratione date of 10 days or so once mixed and repackaged for usage. Also, check the expiration date on your Rep-Cal and Herpitive.

Some parasites do not show up with a float. Require a direct smear with saline. Another option is to request a culture.

we did a stain and a culture last time, and nothing came back. (poor lily had to have a fecal loop.)
also, the meds haven't reached the exp date printed on them.
it seems to be just one episode that starts the whole thing, she will wake up and vomit. so then i either treat her and that will be the end of it (her eating will slowly pick back up over the next few days) or the first couple of times when i didn't have the meds on hand and i had to wait to get to the vet, she stops eating, continues to vomit and then get diarrhea 1-2 days later. it's all down hill from there.
i gave her the meds last night. she ate about half her food and when i ust got up this AM she was munching away happily. last time this happened i took her off insects (because i suspected they might be the problem) and still, she pukes!

i really appreciate all of your thoughts.

I personally have never had a glider who vomits. What does your vet your vet say?

Only thing I can suggest is to be sure you are feeding something that is contaminated with bad germs. Might want to give her bottled spring water as it could be a problem with the water. Try giving baby food fruits and frozen veggies. This would eleminate contaminated foods. Remove everything...BML, fruits, and veggies if not eaten by early morning. Spot clean cage area daily. Strip down cage once a week and disinfect everything in it with a little bit of bleach in hot water and rinse well.

I would ask the vet to do a culture on her urine to be sure it is not a kidney or bladder infection.

What is the antibiotic you are giving by chance? A culture sometimes is needed as sensitivity is needed to be sure what ever the bug is will be killed by the drug of choice.

Do you feed her anything different when she does it? Maybe it could be an allergic reaction? (There isn't a way to do a RAST on gliders I don't think). Maybe she catches some sort of 24-hour bug? My gliders have never vomited so I'm not much of a help...sorry

You may want to start a log of what you feed, when you clean the cage, and other pertinent information. It may help in determining exactly what causes this... obviously something triggers it and antibiotics clears it up, but exactly what may be clear when you have a diary you can flip through to find out what's been happening in your baby's day to day life. I've never heard of this before so I'm sorry I can't be of more help!

lily's been on metrondiazol and baytril. they are both pretty wide spectrum. i'm not sure if it's the antibiotics or it's the reglan (pro-motility drug) that fixes the problem. i don't really want to gamble with giving her one and not the other to figure it out.
culturing the urine sounds like a good option, any clue on how to catch urine on a glider?

Place your glider in a clean plastic container after waking her up. Usually gliders pee at that time. Prior to this get a clean syringe from you vet (preferably one with a cap) After she pees just draw some up in the syringe. Hope she feels better soon.
