The glider may be sterile, or unable to breed. This applies mostly to male gliders, particularly mosaics.

Why? What causes the sterility in these gliders? How do you know if the glider might be sterile or not?

When it says they come from a sterile line how would they have had babies?

Genetic traits are carried on chromosomes. Chromosomes line up in pairs, and in each pair you get one chromosome from the mother and one chromosome from the father. Gender is determined by one specific pair of chromosomes which come in two types, X and Y. Females have XX, one X from mom and one X from dad. Males have XY, one X from mom and one Y from dad. Females cannot pass on a Y chromosome because they don't have any in them.

If a trait is carried on one of these gender chromosomes then it will get passed along differently to sons and daughters. If a trait is carried on the Y chromosome then fathers can pass the trait to sons, but daughters will never have it as they cannot inherit Y chromosomes.

If a trait is carried on the X chromosome then females can have the trait (if it's on both their X chromosomes) or they can be carriers (if it's on only one X chromosome and the other chromosome is stronger). Females can pass the trait on to their sons if the son gets the X chromosome with that trait on it. It gets a bit tricky here sometimes, but usually the X chromosome is the stronger and the male will have the trait.

If sterility is associated with some male mosaic gliders, it means that those mosaic families carry a fault on one of their sex chromosomes that usually causes sterility when the male glider inherits the faulty chromosome. But females of those families could be carriers of the faulty chromosome without having the trait, so they could still breed and pass on the faulty chromosome to daughters who are also carriers or to sons with the trait.

The males can't reproduce, but the females can. However, any male joeys that the females have would then be considered POSSIBLY sterile.

IF I remember correctly, the reason for the sterility in because some of the first mosaics were being inbred too much, resulting in sterility. I guess back then they didn't know that only 1 parent had to be a mosaic to produce a mosaic.

Yeah, the assumption with any new mutation is that it's probably recessive, so people typically breed the mutation back into itself to try to strengthen the line of gene expression. smirk When done irresponsibly it strengthens the bad traits too, ugh.

Thank you both for explaining all that to me. You made it easy to understand.

I don't know if anyone else would like to learn more about it, or if it is being covered at this SGGA, but a suggestion is to have a teaching session on genes and breeding as one of the topics at one of the SGGAs.

Again thanks!

Mosiac breeders know what lines their mosaics come from and will share that information. I have 2 sterile males, 1 was born with an empty pom pom and the other has his testicles, though he has them he is still considered sterile till he produces.

Thanks you made it make perfect sense!
