I was wondering if most of you had a ledge or shelf of sorts for your gliders to eat on. Also is there a certain type to use abd where can I find one?
My glider just hangs on the edge of her food cup to eat which doesn't seem like such a great way to eat. This in one thing I definitly didn't consider in advance. I have 2 perches (wooden round pole thingys) but I think I may need some kind of shelf.
Thanks for your input

What kind of cage do you have? My cage came with a shelf that I put the on. The e-bay cages that I had I would put a perch in front of it so they had someplace to sit while eating. You can get the rope perchs they use for birds. They work great.

Well I have two different cage styles...One we made and it is big...we just set the bowls on the floor of the cage and they STILL sit on the bowl ledge even though it is on a surface....in my other cage it is a large parrot cage, the people that gave it to me with the gliders had galvanized hardware cloth in it so I took it out and there is nothing there for the time being. My glider is eating everything just fine...he sits on the edge of the bowl as well, adn did when he was in the parents cage too. So...I think it depends on the glider...mine perfer to perch on the side of hte bowl...

Maybe you could zip tie one of those shelves you can buy at hardware stores used for closet shelves in there? I dunno , it might work.

I have this cage too! Createcath, how do you like it?? Because I have a glider-kitchen (placed on the bottom) I'm not sure how my babies will like it. I thought of buying a corner ledge )from places like drsfostersmith.com) just so that they would have a place off the ground to sit and eat. Hmm, do you think this would be good? Of course I'm thinking of attaching some fleece to it to make it more comfortable for their little toes. I can't figure out how to link so if you go to drsfostersmith.com and go under small animals, then to containment its on page 4. I'm so sorry its so confusing But if anyone finds it, please tell me what you think??

I have my food bowls on the bottom of their cage. I have created a pavillion with some hardware cloth zip tied to the cage, as the support, and then covered with a piece of fleece that i sewed ties to. Magic and Abbie do not seem to mind at all that their food is on the bottom of their cage. I tried to attach a pic but it would not load.

We use both. All food and water dishes hang on the side of the cage. Bob's dish is quite large and has perches on it..Comet has two small bowls she will either sit on the edge of the dish or hang upside down to eat We also have shelves that are about 2" underneath the food dishes. Most of the time the kids are at the dishes if they are eating thier BML....other than that they like to do the grab and run..and eat (or throw) where ever they choose....Hope this makes sense!

Thanks for the ideas. I have her dishes hanging on the side of the cage and just wanted her to have more room to stand and it. She also seems to just hang onto the dish and eat. I will look around for some other perches. I found a wooden ledge at the pet store, but didn't get it for fear of it getting smelly.

C's dishes are on a shelf, but she still sits on the rim of the dishes...

I have 2 stainless steel (I think) ledges I bought from Petsmart. I know they come in diffrent sizes too. They just hang from the side of the cage. They hook on to the horizontal bars in the cage. They are easy to clean too. I am looking for a picture on them on line. If I find one I will attach it.

None of my cages came with shelves either so I have been working on custom shelves made out of all plastic for easy cleaning. The can fit either front to back, side to side or corners. They can be in any width from 4 inches to 3 feet. PM me if you would like some details.

I use a lid from a large lego box. It is supported by two dowls that run the length of the cage. I sit the glider kitchen on it. You may want to think about making a glider kitchen. It makes clean-up so much easier.

If you do a search on the Glider Kitchen, there are alot of posts...but in a nutshell, it is a plastic igloo with an opening that fits overtop the food dishes...helps to keep the mess down .

Here is a pic of my new cage shelfs. They can be put in the cage so either there IS a lip or there is not one. The lip will help keep dishes from being pushed off. They can be made to any length, are all plastic for easy cleaning, and are light weight. They can either go from side to side or front to back. If anyone is interested, pm me for price.

When I got my new cage it didn't have any shelves in it. I got some high quality gutter guard at Lowes. It was white, comes in 3 foot lengths (I think, if not it's very close to that) and has a solid edge with a lip on it. I cut it to the correct length and attatched it to my cage using cable ties. So far it's made a great shelf for the kids with no buckling or bending.

I have those shelves from PetSmart - Here are a couple of pictures. In this first one, it is on the right hand side of the picture just above the brown log, and just under the multi-colored rope. It hangs on the side of the cage, but my gliders always knock the bowls off, so I just leave them in there for resting ledges, or lookouts, etc.

Here's the other one that sits closer to the bottom of the cage on the left side. Again, I thought moving it closer to the bottom would keep it from being knocked off and food going everywhere - NOT!!! Oh well, they like to sit on it and eat, so that's good I guess.

Oh, I forgot to mention - once they are hooked to the side of the cage on the horizontal bars, for furthe safety, I ziptied them to the cage. The shelves don't come off, but boy the food sure flies.

Cathy, You have probably found them by now, but just in case you haven't gone to PetSmart yet, I think I found them in the hamster section. Hopefully you will find them.
