Hi All I meant to mention this the day of Bugsy's vet visit but it slipped my mind (gee, how could that hapen??) Anyway, while I was at the vet's office she told me that Giardia is raising it's ugly little head very frequently again . She is seeing a lot of gliders sick with it right now - more than usual. I don't know if it is just in my area or not. I wanted to give all of you a "heads-up" just so everyone can be aware.

Thanks Charlee! Did the vet happen to mention anything we can do to prevent our gliders from getting it?

No, when she mentioned the giardia, knowing I had gone through a bout of the little devil with Marge (treated Bugsy but he never showed signs of having it), we discussed the water possibility then went on to fruits, etc.

I don't suppose there is any way to completely eliminate the threat of it working it's way into our homes - just use bottled water and freeze everything we can is all I know to do. Shoot,I even thought of freezing bottled water but don't want to obsess too much - just a little!

I don't mean to start a panic or anything - just wanted to let people know it's out there in large numbers right now.

Thanks for the warning... what are some of the warning signs of giardia?

Giardia is commonly found in the water supply, with the whether the way it is , I can see how it would raise it's ugly head again, also can be found on fruits and veggies..

The suggestions are...

use bottled spring water for your gliders,

be sure you wash your fresh fruits and veggies real well,

when cleaning the water bottle be sure you get inside the tube and under the rubber washer. A real long pipe cleaner does work well there.

Alongside these, Fecals are the best prevention

Take your glider feces in for regular fecal tests, suggested every three months, if they find ANY, have them treat them. too many vets thinks one shell isn't enough to worry about.

as far as symptoms, it is basically a symptomatic, till it becomes a problem with the exceptions of the fecal tests.

but after wards, weight loss, lethargy, diarrhea, dehydration, just basically the feeling something isn't right. Most of the time, they will hide their symptoms till it is too late. You have to be in tune with your gliders health.

Glider Greetings:

Here is a little more information on Giardia:

GIARDIA-1
GIARDIA-2

BTW, I live in the big city.....don't know whether that makes me more or less susceptible to the nasty little bugs; but, I boil tap water for all of my gliders. This also eliminates any possible problem with chlorine poisoning.
