Is fresh coconut safe for gliders? I think it would be fun for mine to chew the shell and give them a snack as well!!~Allison

I get fresh cocnuts for my gliders. I make a hole in the center for them. Take out as much of the cocnut but leave a little for them to snack. After it's empty it makes agreat toy for them. What coconut I don't use I vacuum seal and fresh so they can have fresh all the time.

Are you talking about the fresh green coconuts or the brown ones? Also, I heard it was hard to cut cocnut, advice?

Thanks for the info!

And what about the milk in the coconut fruit? Is that bad for gliders? I think it's different than regular fruit but I don't know how. I remember eating coconuts once and we had to slice it with an axe! What do you guys do to open it?

Mine love coconut. I buy the flaked kind you can get at a health food store - no sugar added. We share, because I love it too. Since it's dried, it keeps a very long time. I use the dried kind as well and mine don't really care for it although my degu and mouse love the stuff! Mine tend to go more for the papaya or pineapple. :o)

What kind of knife do I need to open a fresh coconut?

I would think that if my husband gets a new drill bit(so it is clean) and puts a hole in it, it will be ok for them to play in...

I got a coconut and it has taken me hours to try and break the meat part out of the shell without busting it all to pieces. And this is with the top cut off... gave up on the hole thing. Plus I thought the coconut meat might rot after awhile or can you just leave it in there?

When I buy them at my grocery store, they have a ring cut around them so you can just poke out the "eyes" to drain the milk, then use a hammer and screwdriver to bust them open. I'm not sure what the best method would be if they aren't already scored.

I use my Dremel tool.;-) Husband thinks I am so funny for getting my own tools that he can't use lol. I use it to cut it in quarters so my parrots can have some too.

To open it up just use the back (blunt) side of a cleaver. Hit the coconut in the centre and just continue rotating and hitting. The coconut eventually will crack in half. We just did this tonight and the fresh coconut is sooo yummy!!

I too used my dremel tool! I love it made a pattern before scoring the shell and followed it with the dremmel blade. It was fun...I left all of the coconut in there and put it in the cage for them. The next day I pulled it out split the shell took out the rest and froze it and then laced the shell back together with a long fleece like shoestring! The kiddos loved the coconut meat as well as their new little coco-hut!

My husband and i bought a 2 inch circular drill bit and it puts a nice hole in it and is the perfect size for them to get into it. Also, i dont really have a hard time gutting it!
