#58153 - 09/13/05 11:44 PM Bird cages really ok?

I was going to build my own cage with 1/2" x 1/2" PVC coated wire mesh, but I am seeing a lot of people using bird cages (of appropriate size, of course) for their gliders. For the cost for me to get the wire mesh, plus assembly tools, parts, etc, I am thinking that I would be easily up to or above $50-$60 for a cage that I could buy for $90 and not have to assemble. Now, I like building stuff (larger scale projects), but to me the cage building is more assembly of parts than "building" since I woulnd't be making a big 6'x6' paradise.

Just looking for options.

Nick

I have a bird cage and I love it! Only thing is, the bars go vertically, not horizontal so they have a hard time holding on to the bars. I put up lots of ladders and hanging toys to solve that so now they can climb all they want. My cage is close to 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide and 1.5 feet deep. I got it for $75 at Petsmart.

I use cages like this only in black and love them. They are big enough for up to 3 or 4 gliders and still fit in the bath tub for winter cleaning.

Yup, I have to agree. Although all 3 suggies are separated and Blaze gets the ginourmous cage, the other two are in smaller cages and one of those is a flight cage for a bird. It works really well and Hazel seems to be fine in there. :o)

To build my 5 ft tall cage it costed (is that even a word?) LOL about $100 for all materials and tools. That's a pretty good deal, but you're right, it's more assembly... My b/f did all the "building" aspects to it b/c I can't use a Dreml. hahaha

Dancing, just to clarify, that's $100 for THREE cages? Not $100 PER cage?

I believe it is $100 for all 3. The person always sells these and I have heard good things... Good deal, right?

PS: I am totally following you on this forum. LOL

Doesn't that always seem to happen?

So as long as there are lots of other things to climb around one (which there should be anyway), a bird cage will work just fine?

Yes, that price is for 3 cages. With shipping it is $140 for 3 nice big cages. Which CAN be hooked together with zip ties to make one HUGE cage if you have the space for it!

I love my bird cage!! If I need to travel I just take it apart and if I need to move it, it has handles. It can sit right on top of a one of those fold out table trays. I can also put it right in the tub. I have a wheel and a perch and a ton of toys I switch in and out and he has no trouble running around in there like the mad man he is. It also has on of those trays that slide out so it is super easy to clean the bottom and there is a wire seperater so he he isn't right on his waste!!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

I have a bird cage. It works well. However I'm making one w/ black pvc coated wire, and I will say it looks GREAT and I cant wait to post pics. I do like the pvc coated wire better. Its thicker and I think it looks better. Its also sturdier. I had a prob w/ 1 of my bird cages b/c one of the bars came "unpopped" b/c I put a perch there adn after using it for a few months it eventually was too much and popped the bar off. Luckily I saw my gliders try to excape and fixed it.

All in all, either is fine really. It comes down to whether or not you have the time to make your own cage. If you have the time and desire, I would go for a pvc coated cage.

Thought you might like to see one decorated. I just got Gianna set up in her new cage tonight. This is also the cage I used with the 2nd grade classes to show them what gliders need for cages.

Hi I ordered one of those cages from Ebay. Can two of them be cable tied side to side if you take a side off of each cage to make the cage 60x36x57? Has anyone done this?

Yes, it can be done side by side or even back to back. Just leave off the side or back panels and hook them together.

[:"green"]Most of the glider owners that I know use bird cages (including myself, although I use a different style than what Teresa does). I love bird cages! They are very easy to clean & already have the litter tray in the bottom.
