#58459 - 09/16/05 12:23 PM Where to place cage liner?

I'm new to sugar gliders and I'm still trying to figure out the best system for keeping cages clean. I'm using flight cages that have a metal grid on the bottom, with a slide-out tray below. I've been using newspaper below the metal floor and paper towels above, but I'm not satisfied with the cleanliness. I'd like to purchase some of the cage liners made of corduroy and fleece that I read about on one of the postings, but I'm not sure whether I should use them in the tray below, on top of the metal grid, or should I just get rid of the metal grid altogether? Please help!

Welcome to GC <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The metal grid keeps the dropped, old food away from the glider's reach and also keeps feces and such below and away from the glider as well, so I'd leave it and just line the metal tray with newspaper or paper towels and change them out every other day to keep clean. Material type stuff in the tray itself will only hold in urine and feces and breed bacteria, so a disposable bedding is much cleaner and more sanitary (and easier to take care of, you just toss it in the trash and start over..lol).

Hope that helps some! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I have also used a bedding called CareFresh (which can be purchased at most pet stores) while I love because it really keeps the smell down and is super absorbent. Depending on the type of cage, I have also used papertowels and puppy pee pads. Regardless of what I have at the bottom of the cage, I make sure to pick out dropped pieces of fruits or veggies because some of my gliders like to reach through the grid and grab them later on.

For other cleaning tips, I use Clorox wipes to wipe the cage down daily (helps with getting BML and pee off the sides/bottom of the cage) and do a major cleaning every two weeks.

I steam clean the cage weekly... changing pouches a day before... our cage rests on a piece of polar fleece that gets changed at least twice a week, more often 3-4 times if I'm being good (this last 2 weeks has been crazy so I only did it twice this week!)
