For 3 weeks now, I've been fighting to help Magellan keep his long, beautiful fluffy tail. Today, I had to admit defeat & watch him get half of it amputated because it just wasn't healing. It started with about an inch of fur being "groomed off" on just one side...odd, I thought....but then I saw that he'd been (bitten? injured somehow?) hurt & that was what caused him to strip that section. Into an e-collar with antibiotic ointment we went. Two days later (on Monday), I saw it was getting worse...off to the vet for trip #1. My regular vet was out, but the "substitute" vet was one I'd seen before...we got a better bandage & antibiotics. That Saturday, I saw it STILL wasn't getting better, so back to the vet for trip #2. NO vet AT ALL was at my regular office, so I had to go to the back-up vet...she took off the last inch (the black section) & bandaged back up, etc etc. We hung tight til the next Thursday, when I saw that things STILL weren't looking good...trip #3. Yay, the regular vet was back & he said I needed to change my treatment plan with Magellan...so I did that. Last night, I knew that things were RAPIDLY getting worse & my last nerve frayed into nothingness. In tears, I went in & showed the vet that everything had failed, I admitted defeat, and half of his tail had to come off...NOW. And it did. With a new round of antibiotics and a bandaged-up, e-collared baby in hand I continue on. Have we succeeded yet? Will trip #4 finally make things turn around for the better? I don't know...but one thing I do know for sure: I AM NOT GOING TO GIVE UP! I may sit in the corner & drown in my tears, I may be feeling incredibly overwhelmed right about now...but I will continue to help Magellan try to get better, with every bit of spirit I can muster. He hasn't given in, and I as his nurse/slave/keeper won't either.

Oh I am sorry, that is so heartbreaking. My Sugaree had her tail amputated (twice) as well. She does just great now and doesn't even miss it. Just hang in there your baby will be better soon, the worst of it is over now. They recover just fine it doesn't slow them down one bit!

I'm a somewhat new glider momma and I have not experienced this before, so I can't say that I know what you're going through..I'm not sure if I could stay as strong as you have seemed to be. I don't know you (yet), but I know you have a HUGE heart and you're a great mom to Magellan! There are SO many people here that care about both of you, and I do as well! Keep your head up and cherish the moments you have with him! You guys are in my prayers!

Denise, I'm very sorry I didn't see this sooner As you may remember, I had a rough road of getting Darwin's tail to heal after he injured it in February. It actually took a full four months before I could put him back with his cage mate because the tip wouldn't completely heal. We had to be persistent with antibiotics and he HATED them (the best one for bones tastes horrible - very bitter!) We also used Silver Sulfadiazine Cream for topical treatment of the exposed tip of the tail. I don't know if any of this will help you or not, but know that you're not alone and that eventually it will heal. Darwin now has a 3" nub, but he's clueless about it being abbreviated and is still a happy-go-lucky guy

Well, we had an unveiling tonight....the vet told me to leave the post-operative bandage on for 4 days if Magellan would leave it alone. With the e-collar staying intact, that wasn't an issue. So it was time..... And the news so far is VERY VERY GOOD. The very end of the tail has a small dark scab, I can see that a "callous" is starting to build up at the end. (it's a little larger at the end, but NOT discolored or cold in any way) I was planning to take a couple other babies down for the new vet intern to see what a "normal" glider looks & behaves like, so I'll be asking him when we can get the sutures removed. Thank you all for the prayers and good thoughts. I'm going to keep an optimistic frame of mind that we might have the upper hand on this now. The next thing I need to do is "get some groceries on his frame"....the poor little man is so skinny. I'm letting him eat as MANY mealies as he wants & doubling up on his fruits/veggies/BML dish (he gets morning AND evening meals). He's still in the hospital cage to limit his range of activity, but he comes out at least twice a day for medicine & treats. Now if I could just get him cleaned up a little....I don't want to risk giving him a bath, but still & all the same, he NEEDS ONE

That is great news!!!! I'm pulling very hard for this little one! We made it through the night, collar still on. I took it off for a little while so he could visit with Gidget. Well took him about one minute before he stopped paying attention to her and was chewing the bandage so back on it went!! That little boy can sure be a bugger!! Well, keep us posted, the prayers continue!
