I'd like to start cleaning my cages with a water/vinegar mix. I'd like to get a steamer to speed up the cleaning process but I was wondering if I could use my water/vinegar mix in the steamer rather than just the water.

Also- what type of vinegar is best? I got the regular vinegar in a gallon size & now I'm wondering if a different type would be better.

Also also what dilution ratio is best? Chad said it only takes a teeny weeny bit of vinegar but that doesn't tell me much

Doesn't vinigar smell?
I clean my cage with a special spons, but i dont think you can get it. it is white and onley uses water to clean, and it makes it realy spotles, you can ause them also for pots and pans and other houshold items.

but the thing with te steamr I find a great idea!!! it disinfect and cleans.

also if you use vinigar does the glider not want to get this smell away by "stinking" them self?

I will be interested to hear if other use vinegar in a steamer as well, I just got my steamer and used it last weekend for the first time – and it was GREAT!!!!!!!!! But I don’t remember reading anything in the instructions about adding anything to the water, can’t wait to see what other say!

Suga- are you talking about the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser Sponge??

Yes vinegar does stink & it tastes terrible straight (yes I know this!) but the whole point is to dilute it down. It's my understanding that it's like 90% water 10% vinegar but that's a guess- there's not much vinegar involved though.

I hope I can use it in the steamer- great excuse to buy one!!!

Xglider which kind of steamer did you get?

It's probably the Scunci.... does it look like this?

My friend got that one when she got married & we tested it on her oven... I wasn't really impressed but I think it'd work great for the cages... I'm assuming it did a good job on yours? It was at Target for $50 or $60 last night & I picked it up 19 times before I decided to just wait

This is the one I want... go figure... it's over $100!!!

I know that water does accumulate but you can just wipe it up. I plan on getting one of those plastic chair matts you put on your floor so an office chair can roll.... well one for each cage to sit on - then it'll be easy to wipe up any water that gets on the floor.

Edit: Here's another steamer that has good reviews- this one's cheaper too!

Well someone else posted the exact same post as I did so I guess I just need an answer to my one question:

Do you think it's ok to use a water/vinegar solution in a steamer rather than just plain water?

Thanks!

no idea I find just water works fine on our cages though... I almost bought the first one you listed Sarah- found out its the SAME CLEANER- branded differently and colored differently as the steamfast and that one was on sale so I got it.. I love it... and the larger water capacity. I had used one of the smaller ones before- a friend with one helped when we put the house on the market.. I still love to clean with ours and with Bill's asthma and allergies and some of my issues its great that there is no chemicals involved.. to be honest the directions say not to put any additives in and to use distilled water and I'd be afraid of what the vinegar would do to the boiling point of the water (the reason they say not to use additives) but it makes cleaning the kitchen easier and cleaning other things.. I love it on our hardwood floors and also on the cages as I said.. I have a pair of attachments I use ONLY on the cages and its great....

Do you have the Scunci or the Steamfast then?

I don't think I'm gonna get the Scunci- it has cruddy reviews & I didn't think it cleaned very good when I used my friends.

I thought that the directions said not to use any type of additives... Hmmm... I really wanna use vinegar since it cleans so much better!

I have the "Shark" and it holds a lot of water and works great on my cage! The purpose of having a steamer is to disinfect and sanitize without the use of smelly, harsh cleaners, therefore, I don`t see any reason for wanting to mix vinegar in your steamer. The instructions tell u NOT to put anything in it but water, so I wouldn`t think of trying it. The hot steam does the job good. I just hang an old blanket on the backside to catch any water so its not too messy. It seems like once you run it for awhile, it`s mostly steam and not much of a mess.

I did place the new posting about cleaning with water and vinegar lol, and I now stumbled across this posting. I wanted to know about the vinegar and water for those "in between wipings" during the week just for spot cleaning and then every so many weeks, I`ll pull out the steamer. I would like to know if the vinegar can be harmful to them being that it`s so diluted with water. I think any smell from it( which shouldn`t be much)should disappear quickly but I`d like to know from someone who knows for sure

You know what Sarah, I don't honestly believe the vinegar would cause any harm at all! However, due to you steaming you wouldn't need to use it. If you're not steaming then I think it's a great idea. I use vinegar and water to clean with a lot. There is no need to worry about exact ratios. The regular vinegar you have now is fine. Just add a good spash to your water, shake it up and you're good to go!!

Thanks!!

I haven't gotten my steamer yet... gotta save up lol But I am gonna use the vinegar/water mix for inbetween cleanings & I don't think I'll put it in the steamer... wouldn't wanna ruin it!

Chad used to work at a petstore (a loooong time ago- before we even met!) and he said that's all they ever used to clean cages & tanks- it's animal friendly.

Patsy, do you give it a wipe down with just a damp cloth after or just let it evaporate/air dry?

I use a scotch-brite sponge with the scrubber on one side and just rub the bars down good inside and out and let air dry. I do dry off the trays though so the Aspen doesn't stick. The vinegar smell doesn't linger long and it is very "safe". On a side note I prefer to use it on all my windows and mirrors too!! It's cheap, effective and safe - in my world you can't beat that!!

I have the steamfast and love it.. 50 oz capacity means I can clean a lot in one shot... water alone works fine, and heh- I leave the cage sourrounds on and then remove after cleaning to wash- they are very damp from the steam...
