It recently came to my attention that another website was using one of my photographs. When I contacted the site owner I was told that they got the picture from Photobucket and it was therefore usable by the public in any form they wanted. In looking into Photobucket's User Terms and their Copyright Policy, I found that there IS a loophole which would make it appear that way to the average user. However, there is an easy "fix" to the loophole - change your User Album Settings to "Private" and then your media is no longer "open to the public" for their use. If your media is covered under a copyright, then it's not usable at all, but some people may not read that far into the policies (as was the case in this instance of usage of my photograph).

OMG! So, if we make it private, then we'll still be able to post a pic here from photobucket??

Thanks for the info! I'm going to check on mine right now!

Is it considered illegal to take pictures off of a site like photobucket and use them for your desktop background? Not distributing them elsewhere, just personal use as a cute wallpaper.

Illegal or not how is anybody going to stop it. As a photographer of sorts I know that any picture I put on line can pretty much be copied. I would be honored that someone liked one of my pictures enough to use as a desktop photo. Once I put them on line they are fair game for that so to speak

The best way to do this is to watermark your photos. Even if someone uses it, it tells everyone who's photo it is. This is why I have no photos on photobucket.

How do you watermark and what do you use instead of photobucket?

There are a few ways, there are some software out there that will do it, I make my own and apply it to the photo.

I have a few websites that I upload my photos to and link it from there with a disclaimer on my site.

If it was private, then wouldn't it make it to where if we posted a link to it here on GC, then nobody on here could see it?

I'll start watermarking my photos on Photoshop. tounge

Suz you can use photo shop when you edit your photos and do a select all and imbed the water mark to all your photos taken in the file. Also one can set up there camera to automatically put in the metdata your copyright info hidden in the photo itself No one can see it but if someone steals a photo to have it printed by an outside source they check for this info and if it is copyright protected by the original owner they do not print your photo.
The best thing to do for saving photos for the web is save them as a very small file size this way if one is stolen it is of no use to anyone but always keep the original for your on personal use.

here's an example of what I imprint into my photos but they also can be edited out with the right program

I didn't know you could save them to have the watermark on it! I thought you had to make a brush, put it on a new layer, select the transparency, and then save it as a jpg. roflmao Such a long, complicated process. shakehead

You can go to setup on photo shop and have ea water mark embedded onto the photo as a batch file. Once you setup your water mark you save it and select later on future photos but you can do this again as a batch same thing as editing colors exposure and many other process in photoshop.

There are numerous ways to do this one being the way you describe, But if like me when you go out and take photos I may use up 24 gig of cards and I don't wish to edit ea photo one at a time so I select all in the same lighting or scene and do those as a batch. on a 1 day shoot I can take as many as 800 pictures.

James

Once you're logged into Photobucket:
1) Click on [account options] in the upper right corner of your window.
2) Then, scroll down to "Album Settings" and select [Private] from the drop-down menu box.
3) Then scroll to the bottom of the page and click [Save] thumb

That is part of the reason I left Photobucket and now exclusively use Flickr. If someone tries to right click and save, they just get a little decoy photo. It's quite cool. smile

(True, they can always prntscrn, but anyone can do that ANYWHERE. They won't get high res copies that way.)
