If this is in the wrong section, sorry, was not sure where to put it.

I have been putting together my own personal hard copy book of glider health and other facts to use when needed for certain issues. I remember seeing a post about fleas and would appreciate any and every help on this issue to complete this chapter for my book.

1. I know that not all animals are susceptible to fleas. Are gliders?

2. If gliders are, how can you tell when they have them?

3. How can you get rid of them without hurting the gliders?

4. How can you have successful prevention of fleas before it's a problem?

Those are the only questions I can think of for right now. If there is anything I have missed, please let me know.

I'm not able to answer your questions. I was told when I bought Keiko (erroneously, I'm sure) that gliders don't get fleas. I would imagine anyone with hair or fur could get fleas. I would guess you do NOT want to use chemicals, sprays, soaps, collars, or anything that emits a chemical. Since they are constantly grooming, and their systems are so delicate, I just wouldn't want to take the chance. Perhaps a flea comb, if you notice fleas? And I would guess you'd notice if your glider is scratching excessively, and when you run your fingers through the fur, you'd notice little bumps (the fleas themselves) and/or scabs from where they've been bitten. Of course, a visit with your glider-knowledgeable vet would be in order.

Maybe you can ask your vet these questions, and then let us know. smile

Gliders can get fleas if fleas are in the home or room where the gliders are kept, or if they ever play in an outdoor area that has a flea problem.

You can tell if they have them the same way as with a dog or cat. They would be visible. You can see the eggs in their fur and bedding. They would get on you when you handle them.

Prevention would be to keep them off your other pets, and out of your house.

Spraying for an infestation already in the house would not be a good idea while the gliders are there. It could make them very ill. Using powder or other methods of poison are also dangerous for gliders.

In my opinion, since fleas are fairly large compared to some other pests, the gliders would probably groom them off of each other, thus killing most of the adults. However, fleas are harbingers of disease and parasites, so having them around at all would be unacceptable.

Hope this helps.

From my understanding, (this is all here-say) no one has had a flea infestation problem in gliders (like you can get with dogs) I would assume it is because of their grooming habits, but again, just here-say.

I do know that they can eat fleas if fleas jump on them, and it is therefore possible for them to contract tapeworm (which has happened to at least a few glider owners).

Since fleas are mostly carried by dogs and cats, I would say preventative care for your dogs and cats would keep the likelihood of your gliders ever coming in contact to a minimum. But I agree with Katty, all of these questions, would be excellent questions to ask your glider knowledgeable veterinarian (and then come back and share with us! grin ).

I suppose I will have to find a way to ask my vet without being charged a fee since I don't need to go see him.

I'm also curious about flea control and prevention because we do not have any other animals other than the gliders. I know we can end up with fleas just from them getting on us from contact from other animals or just from the outdoors period so I just want to be safe and prepared ahead of time.

I was told the same thing as KattyM - that gliders couldn't get fleas. It was because of the density of their fur.

While I'm not sure if I actually believe that, I DO believe that if they ever did get them, they would quickly groom them off & be at risk for tapeworm, as Gretchen suggested.

First off...I am leaving in all my original info...but this is something I replied to on a similar post a bit back:

If you (speaking generally about anyone...not you...lol) have fleas in your home...it is best to keep other animals away from your gliders and treat the animals in your home ASAP. If a glider eats fleas, which is what would happen IF a glider has fleas on them, they would groom the fleas off and can eat them...and fleas cause tapeworm in gliders.

Tapeworm can be tested by a fecal by your vet, and the meds I was prescribed for my rescue girl whom acually came to me with tapeworm was just a three day dose of some chalky looking liquid the vet prescribed her. We did a re-test a couple weeks after she was off the meds and it was all gone! If she would have tested positive...meds would have been administered again of course.

I noticed she was very thin, boney in the backbone...when her test came back positive...not much surprise. You can also watch the poo for signs of worms...but I did not see any...so you never know.

Tapeworm is not common in gliders, however is easy to diagnose and treat. If left untreated...you could have SERIOUS issues and ultimitely death as the tapeworm is stealing nutrients and food the glider takes in, so always watch to the signs if you have had fleas in your home...and if you are visiting with a friend at thier house...before bringing your gliders...might be wise to make sure they are flea-free before bringing your suggies.

It (tapeworm) can not be passed between gliders...it is aquired through gliders eating fleas or raw meat.

So...Gliders do not get fleas really, no...but fleas are still cause for concern and can cause a threat to gliders.

Hope that helps everyone!

***As for using flea products on gliders...seriously dangerous....treat all other animals...wash hands I would say a few times before coming in contact with your gliders...for a few days after applying drops to other pets, wash hands BEFORE handing gliders still, and NO products should be used on gliders. They could become seriously ill, develop some sort of condition from the chemicals, or even die. NOT WORTH IT!

DO NOT use Tea Tree Oil...it is extremely hazardous the animals like cats...I would NOT advise for use around gliders. As for natural remedies...Eucalyptus deters fleas...so load up your babies cage. They will love you for it and it will smell good and help protect them!

GOOD LUCK GETTING RID OF THEM!!!

So everyone hit the flea question ,but how about treating for them? What can you use so you do not harm the sugars. I usually use a spray on the carpet and furniture, curtains, etc. Can I still use it but not in there room. I need to knick this in the butt before it gets out of hand. Anyone??????

Here is my reply from our PM wink Also, I thought I'd better mention that this works well for getting rid of those pesky tiny ants that seem to invade my home every spring and fall...
