I was recently browsing the Net and came across an article that said the best way to clean fresh fruits and vegetables was with hydrogen peroxide and apple cider vinegar. The author suggested getting two spray bottles and fillinf one with hydrogen peroxice and one with apple cider vinegar. First clean with one of the cleansers and then the other. Then use clean water to rinse. Using this method removed all the bacteria. It was more effective than any of the commercial cleansers it was campared to.

The article did not mention how effective the cleaning method was for removing parasites or insecticides. But it did state that this was the best way to clean all kitchen appliances including cutting boards. What do you think? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />

Yes..also vinegar (white reg. too and baking soda) My mother would fill the sink and add a bit of Clorox, then the veggies or fruits. She drove me nuts with that so I've never done it. LOL
I'm thinking though, since we peel the fruit and (sometimes veggies) that it doesn't matter? As long as they are rinsed and a clean knife is used. Just my thoughts <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

One other thing...I add a few drops of Apple Cider Vinegar to my suggies water bottles ....kills bacteria. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Think about it like this. Clean the fruits before peeling them with the clean knife. If there is bacteria on the outside peel you will spread it to the fruit while you are peeling it. Plain water will not remove the bacteria.

With all the imported fruits and vegetables I have become paranoid about cleaning them. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif" alt="" /> In the past I always just rinsed them in cold water from the tap. Now I am a little more thorough. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

That's interesting cleaning the fruits and veggies with peroxide and vinegar. I have always worried about buying imported fruits and veggies and try to buy USA products when possible. The thing about it is, are USA products any better after being out in the bins with people handling them, coughing, sneezing, etc.? You have no way of knowing how many people have come through the store with all sorts of bacteria to pass on to the unwary. Guess it wouldn't be a bad idea to use the peroxide and vinegar on all fruits and veggies that are going to be consumed raw.

I refuse to buy imported fruits...ick. Unless you consider Hawaii imported? lol I do wash the fruits and veggies..with water, then rub them hard dry. I get most of my stuff here home grown...lucky on that (veggies and some fruits) <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Have you done any more research on this? The fact that the solution of peroxide and apple cider vinegar kills the bacteria is good and I think I will start using it in the kitchen. Is that peroxide first and then the vinegar? The thing about it removing parasites and insecticides: parasites - maybe, insecticides - from reading post about tree branches, etc. that have been sprayed, I doubt it. Let us know if you find any more information on it.
