#69372 - 11/19/05 07:05 PM Cage warning!

Suncoast is the best place (in my opinion) on finding a cage for my suggy when it came to size and price. I was thrilled at how well put together it was made and the color choices are great. However, I am concerned with the safety of the cage. When I received my new glider cage it came with two plastic mesh pieces to place along the cage. Of course it is there for young joeys (so that they can't squeeze between certian bars) but my problem was that it still didn't prevent my joey from taking a night time stroll through the house. In fact, to my horror I went upstairs at about 3 in the morning to the bathroom and found her in the toilet! Lucky for me she seemed to have fallen in recently before my arrival and she survived. My husband and I studied the cage the next day and discovered how she was escaping- through the horizontal bars between the two doors.

I have attached a file of the cage with the following color coding areas:
Red: Unsafe area and how my baby girl escaped
Green: The area where I was provided (from suncoast) with extra mesh guards
Blue: Another place that should have extra mesh guards

I sent an email out to Lisa and I am happy to know that she told me that she will be looking into the problem. I decided that I wanted to alert others that they may have this problem too and to watch carefully. However, PLEASE dont be discouraged from buying the product.

OMGosh, I am so glad your little girl is ok! Give her some extra lovins. Sadly, toilets are the number one killer of gliders. There are safty ladders made for toilets that provide gliders a place to climb back out if they happen to fall in. Unfortunately, they are not the most sanitary things (imo). Try to get in the habit of keeping the lids down.
Thank you for the warning (and the praise) of the cage. I'm sure Lisa was distressed about the situation and will do what is needed to correct the problems.

Joeys are quite adept at squeezing out where we least expect it.
Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

They are little Houdini's, aren't they? Glad you found her when you did.

yup, I was REALLY worried when her crabbing was more of a slow gurgle. I thought she had phnemonia at first.

#69377 - 11/19/05 08:15 PM Re: Cage warning! [Re: ]

is she ok, if she isn't acting normal you should take her to a vet. just to be safe.

Oh, this happen about two months ago. I was going through some forums and saw some percautions types and decided I'd share mine too. But thatnk you for the caring. <3

Wow!! Thanks for sharing your warning! Glad to hear your suggie turned out okay!!

I have to say though, I have 2 of those cages from Suncoast and I've got breeding pairs in each (with little joeys) and I've never once had an escapee or even close. I thoroughly checked bar spacing all around the cage when I got them, mine are just fine. Perhaps you got a defective cage with unusually large bar spacing?? Either that, or you have a real Houdini for a glider !

Mausi! How horrifying! To find a baby in the toilet! Ugh! I am so glad she was okay. I know Lisa will do everything in her power to make sure the problem is corrected. Good Warning.
