i could no longer care for my gliders, so a girl from my work and her fiance took them.
the female has been pregnant twice now, each time with two joeys. and each time she rejects one of them (stops feeding it, pushes it out of the nest) then they eat it.
why is this happening?

The glider needs more food. Put food in care 24/7 when pregnant and 2 x the protien.Do not feed glider pinky.

There is definitely some reason she is rejecting them, has she ever successfully carried a joey to oop? It sounds like a nutritional deficiency… it could be something genetic that the mother is interpreting as genetically wrong…. I would also ask if a wellness / vet check has been done to rule things out and/or determine if there is a reason…

Often times if the mom is not producing enough milk to sustain the joeys, she will reject/canabalize one or all of them. In cases where it is a set of twins and only one is being rejected, it is most likely due to not having enough milk supply for both joeys. Sometimes increasing the amount of food and also the amount of protien the mom gets is enough to correct the problem. Other times, the human parent has to step in and help supliment feed the joeys so that there is enough of mom's milk. It is best if just suplimenting and return of the joey to the parents for the rest of their care can be done. That way, mom gets a break from the responsibility of producing enough milk but the joey gets all the benefits of the care provided by the parents.

If Mom is rejecting all joeys, there could be another issue going on such as a pouch infection that makes it painful for her to nurse the joeys. That doesn't sound like the case with this one though.

Some people say not to feed the parents pinky mice when they have joeys but joeys and pinky mice have very different smells and gliders are scent oriented. They can tell the difference between pinky mice and their joeys. Eating pinky mice does not mean they will eat their joeys. And pinky mice are an excelent source of protien and calcium. (though it is a bit gross to me)

I'm sorry about the loss of the little joey and hope all turns out well for the surviving twin. She may want to consider having Dad neutered so this won't happen again in the future.

It sounds like the mom is not producing enough milk to sustain 2 joeys. When mom's are preggo it is important to give them double the protein.
or
She could be a young mother and not be able to care for 2 joey's, how old is she?

Sometimes it isn't any of the above and simply that she is just a bad momma. Some gliders are not meant to be parents.. just like some humans are not meant to be. PLEASE Don't take it out on her though. Just get your male fixed and then you won't have to go through the heartache of seeing an eaten joey.. I know how horrible it is... I've seen one and the joey was still alive... you could see right into the heart poor baby

You don't need to give them up just don't try to breed them any more. Neuter yuor male and relieve the stress momma has to go through of having joeys.

This suggests to me that she isn't producing enough milk to support two joeys at the same time. Not that she is a bad mom or that she is to young. While a vet check can't hurt, I doubt it is medical with her either or a genetic problem with the joeys being rejected. Still, I would consider neutering the male and not putting them through this again.

skipped that part... I am just stuck on that she is giving them away They are still great pets even if they can't have babies... And tha (glider not being good parents)t is still a possiblily for others.. but in her case it does sound like momma isn't making enough milk.

What has worked for me when a momma has had a history with rejecting is pinkies every week from the time you find out she has joeys ip up until the joeys are aout 4 weeks oop have ALWAYS worked for me. I also put a little more BML in their dish as well. I really have only had one who ate the baby but I have had 3 others who rejected and I had to help out. The next time I do the pinky thing and it works out great!

Please still don't get rid of your gliders. It is heartbreaking to them knowing that they just lost their momma (you).
