#69849 - 11/24/05 09:32 PM Aluminum Screen for Cage
Anonymous
Unregistered

I am thinking about adding on to my glider cage, extending it all the way to the ceiling. I would like to know if it is alright to use alumium screen instead of the PVC wire ( I have a lot of screen left over from another project, and the PVC wire is so expensive!) Is aluminum safe, and can gliders chew holes in it?

I would personally go with the Pet Screening if you wanted to use screen material. Be sure you dont have chewers. The aluminum tends to tear rather easy and that is the main thing I would be worried about. That is the one reason why I would personally think it would be unsafe to use.
I may be wrong though, it has been known to happen in the past <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

I have two very large ceiling to floor cages made with the black pet screen material, and it makes for SUPER EASY cleaning!!

Also, from the look of your pic, it does not look like you coated the wood frame. If you did, what did you use?

Actually, true aluminum screening is pretty durable and makes wonderful cages. If you use it, a little bonus feature you will notice is that it actually trims your gliders nails while they run around on it! Right now, I have a aluminum mesh cages that are similar to reptariums for some of my gliders. They are wonderful cages, but for some reason, my females are getting really stressed in them (I think it's because they can see the gliders in the cage next to them too clearly)...
