I am so confused. Ayla my 8 month OOP female is a psyco! I have her out with the other 2 every night for tent time or playtime in the bathroom or small bedroom, every morning I let them out to play on me while I clean up before they go to bed, take them around in the bonding pouch during the day, when it is not too cold outside or am just working around the house. But she is still just MEAN. Some days she is sweet, infact I went a whole 3 days without bleeding. But then this morning I opened the cage to get the food dishes and all 3 came out climbing on my arms and shoulders as always and all the sudden Ayla dug her claws into the back of my wrist and started feriously (sp?) biting. She had a death grip on my wrist and just kept biting and shaking her head trying to tear my flesh away. I tried the stern "NO", blowing on her, and puting my other hand in her way. Nothing stopped her. By the time I could not "Take the bite" anymore and ripped her off my arm and put her back into the cage, I had 28 bleeding holes and tears on my wrist. I can not even wear my watch today it hurts so bad. What am I doing wrong?????? When she is nice, she is SOOO nice, but then that evil twin thing happens and everyone is scared to death of her.

Okay, first take a deep breath. I have to go for about 10 minutes or so, but will be back. In the meantime, can you answer a few questions?

1-is it only your hands/lower arms she attacks?
2-What brands/scents of soap and/or perfume do you use?
3-How often is she 'nice' compared to 'mean'?

OUCH!
That sounds absolutely terrible. We need to look at some things that might be triggering the behavior.
Does she get along with the other gliders or does she show Alpha attitudes towards them? Aggression, food hogging, bullying?
Do you use any perfumed soaps or lotions that she either doesn't like or thinks might be yummy?

I for one can NOT take the bites and especially those bull dog attacks.

I just don't know what could be triggering them other then a scent on you that she just does not like.

Teresa, we were posting at the same time, lol. Scent may be it..or not. But let's see if we can get to the bottom of it.

Oh, and I forgot the owner's

Does she only do this when she smells other animals on you? The other animals in the house might make her nervous, or maybe a soap or scent like Jen and Teresa said. I keep some of that Purell antiseptic stuff in the glider room, and use it before one of my cages (he doesn't like other glider smells on me). He lets me know if I forget. Give that a try for a few days and see if it helps.

I'm back, to answer some questions, she was about 5 months old when I got her. She had been picked on from another female (she was missing tail hair and is missing a toenail that the breeder did not tell me about)and she was in a small cage alone with no toys, no blankies, no pouch, I felt sorry for her and immediately took her home, but she has gotten along GREAT with my younger two. She has slept in the same pouch with them from the first night they were put in the same cage. She has never shown any meaness to them, very nice, eveyone grooms each other and cuddles.
We never know when she will bite or cuddle, attitude changes by the second and gives no warnings, except we are not able to hand feed treats or give licky treats, she grabs our fingers hangs on tight and draws blood.
Last night she did try to keep Lilo, my little female, inside the coconut so she could not come out and play with me. It seemed wierd, but I did not think about that this morning.
I do not use any scented soaps or perfumes. If fact, I play with them last thing at night and first thing (before showering) in the morning, so I should smell like them. I should ask hubby about that
It is usually my hands and fingers she attackes. This is the first time for the wrist, maybe that is why it freaked me out and it has NEVER been this ferious! She wanted to kill me. Stitch even jumped on her to get her to stop, but he was scared to and ran up my arm. She has bit my neck acouple times in tent time, sneaky little thing curls up like she is cuddling and then bites.
I will not give up on her, just must be doing something to tick her off.
The other night my friend came over and she got in the tent with me, first thing Ayla did was jump on her hand and bit her finger right by the nail, drew alot of blood. Nice first impression, I had warned her that Ayla bites. She did not move and Ayla let go and curled up in her lap the rest of the tent time. I am soooo confused by her.
ANY AND ALL suggestions WELCOME PLEASE

Tbull… well first off it sounds like she had a rough start in life, and maybe more of a rescue situation…. It took me about 8 months to bond with my Surge, well to gain his trust that he will not lunge and go for blood, I actually can not remember the last time he drew blood now, but I can not reach into the pouch and not clench my teeth waiting for the bite…lol…. Glad to hear you are committed, hang in there, if she was not handled much it just may take some time to gain her trust….

Thanks, so is it normal for her to be getting meaner? PLEASE tell me "they all do this right before they love you forever!"

I did talk to the breeder about the biting a few weeks ago and she said to carry Ayla around by herself, so she HAS to get used to me. I tried it for a couple days, but she got SOOOOOO sad and started sleeping alone, so I went back to taking them all out together. The breeder said "none of her gliders bite, so it must be me" but I got Lilo and Stitch from another breeder and they have never bit me or anyone else. Of course they were only 8 and 10 weeks OOP and came from big toy and family filled cages when I got them, but they bonded to us right away.
Guess I will just have to tell people I have wild cats or something when they ask about my scars.
One more question: I did not want to get Stitch neutered (WAY too scared to risk my baby boy) but now I am worried that if Ayla gets preggo, will she get even meaner? Or will I be able to check on or touch the baby.

I have never bread… so I can not offer advice on that… but as for the war wounds… lol….i think the nails if left untrimmed leave worse wounds…. No one ever notices the teeth marks….lol…. but the nails marks look like a road map of a downtown…. Lol…

I agree that a rescue is what this girl shoud be labeled. We had a pitbull biter..and I can tell you that the issue with your girl is trust and anger, and none of it to do with you directly. First, she doesnt' trust you. That is NOT your fault. She has been abandoned before, by her first owner, and neglected in many ways. So she is lacking in trust, and angry because she hasn't yet learned that one person isn't the same as another, and you won't do to ther what the last person did, or let her languish with a glider that beats her up..etc. The way she sees it, people are not good things, and when is it going to go back to the way it was before??She does not trust that toys, clean pouches, clean cage, tent time, etc, will ALWAYS be there yet. This is why rescues can be SO difficult.

Here are some suggestions, to start...
1) Taking the bite may, or may NOT work. She is threatened by your hands (again...NOT your fault) Try wearing long sleeves, and purchase a $10 sweat jacket at WalMart if you don't have one...you can pull your hands inside when getting her out..let her get used to the fact that YOU are not a threat.
2) Give solid treats (often)...like yogurt drops, grapes, something solid. Do NOT let her grab your finger....if she tries, pull back, and offer again. She can have the treat, but NOT injure you.
Go to things like licky's when she'll take a solid treat without trying to take your finger off with it. Or offer a licky on a spoon.

3) Make sure to wash your hands/arms and change clothes before tent time (and long sleeves!). Make yourself as "neutral" smelling as possible so as not to be a 'threat'. Best would be to set aside a set of 'tent time' clothes, and use them nightly, until they need desperately washed, lol. That way smells are familiar.

4) DO NOT take offense at her behavior. In additon to all else...she is TESTING you. She's thinking, sort of=="How far can I go she will take..or will she give me up like the last one???". It could take MONTHS for her to finally decide...."they really love me!!!", and stop. It depends on how deeply that particular glider was emotionally wounded, which there is no way to tell.

All you need are 3 things...Patience, Persistence, and LOVE. And an understanding that it's really not YOU she is having difficulty with. These gliders may take a long time to convince that, YES, you really do love them, NO you would never hurt or neglect them, YES you will always be there for them, etc. , but when one of these gliders comes around, there is NOTHING more precious or valuable, when that trust is given to YOU.
Hope this helps.

What is scary is, the breeder I got her from advertises herself as a glider rescuer, but Ayla was one of her "hand raised babies"
I will try those suggestions, It is just so hard when I love her so much and she seems to hate me. I will have to stop myself from getting excited when we have a good day, because it makes me just curl up and cry on days like today.
But I will wear her down!!!! Just wait I will be posting here in 10 yrs saying "Ayla finally took a mealie from my hand today !!!!"

Just keep in mind...she DOESN'T hate you. She just won't allow herself to know you yet. And it's not your fault. Get upset at the person who had her before, and don't think it's personal. Because of her early experiences (which can RUIN even an "hand-raised" glider)-she is putting you in with her knowledge of "humans"-which according to her early experience, is not good. She doesn't hate you...she's just trying to "prove" you and decide if you're worthy of trusting. If you give up, you're not, and then it will be even harder, or never. Just have persistence, and patience for as long as it takes. You're also welcome to PM any time. With persistence, (and lots of spoiling), I'll bet she'll come around. Keep us updated.

Well the spoiling will not be a problem, haha, my hubby already asks if he can have whatever new fruit or veggie I have in the fridge, "or is it for the monkeys?" and my kids keep telling everyone "the monkeys have more toys than we do" I even bought my first sewing machine to try my hand at making toys and pouches
Thank you all AGAIN! I thought I had done my research before getting my monkeys, but I learn more and more here everyday.

WOW she sounds like my almost 12 year old daughter. Never know what she is going to do. Kiss and hug on me or hate me. LOL. You sound like you care so much and that is what is going to make your baby love you. She will come around after she has trust in you I guess sometimes it just takes longer than what we want it too. I have done the shirt over the hands thing and it seemed to help a bit. But easily blowing everytime I see a bite coming is what worked the best for me. My girl use to bite me and now she lends down like she is going to and I gentley blow and she looks at me like "What you thought I was going to bite you" and she stops.

haha, maybe she is just a teenager! Well last night was the weirdest yet. I made sure I had all the favorite toys and treats, went into the guestroom for playtime (figured I might as well be cuffy if I was going to get attacked hehe)
And nothing! Stitch went down my shirt to hang out, instead of down my back though, he curled up in the armpit of my sweatshirt, yah that is cuffy, NOT, but Lilo the I MUST PLAY PLAY PLAY girl laid on my cut up wrist and would not move. I put her on the toys, on the bed, everywhere she would instantly jump back on my wrist and just laid there. Not licking or grooming or anything just sprawled out over my wrist the whole time. Now for Ayla, At first she did not want to come out of the pouch, but she let me hand her a yogurt treat without lounging or anything. I could not believe it! My husband and son say I give animals too many human emotions, but I swear she looked sorry. After a few treats (I did not have the nerve to push it with hand feeding a mealie) she climbed up on my right shoulder and cuddled in for the whole time. I just did some reading and no one played at all. Maybe they all thought they were in trouble from being put up early yesterday morning. Ayla reminded me of my daughter when she is in trouble, curls up on the couch and puts her head on my shoulder too.
This morning everyone was back to normal, jumping around the cage and begging to come out. Being the whimp that I am of course I said yes. Ayla was a totally different monkey. Stayed on me and NOT ONE NIP!!!!!!!! So happy!!!!! I know things can change quick with her, but I will take any lovin I can get from the little monster

oh yeah! I've been reading your thread, haven't posted since I'm by far not an expert, lol, still working on my first glider... but I am still happy that she behaved herself! Maybe she is starting to come around and see you aren't like the others!

Good luck!

Just a long shot here but maybe after her pit bull attack, she was surprised that you not only came back for more but came back with goodies for her. (instead of going away and ignoring her) It is these little things that teach them that we are not all bad humans.

I may have found the reason for her attack the other morning, may have been a hormone thing as I caught her and Stitch "Getting REAL friendly" last night They were really quiet and so she may already be preggo and I did not know it. I was and still am hoping to wait a bit to be a granny, but it would explain her mood swings.
ps. got a little nip this morning, but no more pit bull attacks so far.

That's good to hear! Just come back from agression with kindness and patience, and it does work. I think that's what finally ended Gimli's attacks-he had a look on his face like he'd expected to be thrown or something...and it didnt' happen. And I think gliders have more human like emotions than any animal I've ever had..one of the things that makes them SO endearing. Keep us updated, and let us know if you do end up with a little one IP!

I had a glider that the other two glider would not let her eat ,so she bit me because she wounted food, try giving her some food all by her self before play, and see if it help.

getting food is definatly not the problem with this girl haha she is a little (whoops, BIG) piggy. She is always up first to eat and goes to bed last to make sure she gets the last of the good stuff
I really appreciate the thought. I am interested in looking into everything.

UPDATE!!! For anyone else with a "pitbull" biter, DO NOT give up, I took everyones advise and Ayla is finally making progress. She is even taking treats from my hand without biting!
I have been putting her in my shirt (very scary at first to have a big time biter in your shirt haha)and no problems. This morning during playtime, when I got her out she even jumped onto my hubby's head and played "keep away" with Stitch. This is big as she has always been afraid of men. It really freaked out my husband, he is fine petting them but has a little problem with "little bat looking things" crawling on him. When I put everyone back in the cage, Ayla was sitting on my arm in the cage licking me and started to bite (I forgot that I had lotion on)she bit lightly and one little blow from me and she stopped!!!! She tried 2 more times and stopped each time with just alittle nip. I know it sounds dumb to be so excited but it is a HUGE step for us! Thanks again for all your suggestions.
