I have a little boy who will be 10 weeks OOP this week. We handled him quite a bit, almost from birth. He was the sweetest little fellow...then all of a sudden, around 5 weeks ago, he began attacking my hand. I carry him around all day long, and he's fine with that, but if I put my fingers or hand anywhere near his pouch, he attacks...I mean he's REALLY upset--rares up on his hind legs and swats with both hands, and yells, and bites. This morning, he was still awake when I came downstairs, so I put my hand in his cage. I put it right in the middle and held it there. He went from side to side trying to reach it, holding on with one foot while he stretched toward me. He wouldn't jump on me, tho. So, I put my hand near a ledge, so he could get to it and he attacked. I don't get it. I feed him, and carry him all day long. I've never had another joey behave this way. He goes to a new home next week, and I've been working to try to tame him, but so far, no luck. Any suggestions??

Just out of curiosity, have you been washing your hands between handling other gliders and handling him?

That is actually a bit of a trick question, because either a yes or no answer could be the problem. If the answer is yes, you will have to try switching soaps. If the answer is no, try washing your hands between gliders. If the answer is no, and he still attacks after washing your hands, it may just be his personality. I have a pair of gliders, Ross and Rachel, that in every set of twins, there is a "good twin", and an "evil twin". The "good twin" is always nice, calm and docile, but the "evil twin" hates everyone and everything but his paernts and twin brother.

You may also want to try the old "smelly t-shirt" bonding trick, where you wear a t-shirt for a day or two, then put it in his cage so he can get used to your scent, in case he has somehow forgotten who you are.

Same question about the hand washing or not, for the same reasons.
Second question, do you handle any other pets before him, without washing your hands. Mine hate dogs.
If he is still with his parents and you already know what home he's going to have in a few weeks, separate him now and start carrying him around with you everywhere and even giving him his food by hand.
Also some gliders get very cage and pouch protective, especially my boys. Try carrying him in a different pouch than he has in his cage.

Your little one has learned to become pouch protective. sounds like he has also learned how to bluff you out of handeling him by his little tantrams.

With gliders who seem to have crabby babies...these little ones need to be worked with several times a day. Use cut fleese blankies and place inside the pouch of the parents. When removing the little ones...slip the parents out first then grip the blankie and babies and remove. The odor will rub off onto your hands and will make it less stressfull on the little ones then when being held.

For now...seperate out the 10 week oop. joey from his parents. Work with him as above with the pouch and several times a day for about an hour each time. When he strikes to bite....have a piece of monkey biscuit that has been soaked in apple juice and alternate it with a grape or piece of apple so he gets a mouthfull of something good from your hand everytime. Night time...offer BML on your fingers...befor he has his dinner so he is hungry. He does not eat anything till he comes to your hands and eats from them first. Remove the wheel inside the cage. It is also best to work with him in a small baby cage so he will be confined to a smaller area. My baby cages measure 11x14x24 inches tall.

It is best to start working with babies several times a day.....with your hands and one on one when tiny if crabby....rather than long periods carried in a pouch.

I got a pouch protective baby who's getting better and better all the time. I got him from Judie at 5 months and i've had him since Easter. I'm training him as a bra baby and he's about 50-50 on crabbing and not. He doesn't lunge anymore and I call his bluff all the time. He's a sweetie though. Hope you can get it worked out. **Judie, thought you'd like to know how he is)

Thanks so much for all the info. I had tent time with him today (something I usually reserve for gliders I"m trying to bond with). He made GREAT progress. We're having another tent session in a few minutes. He climbed on me and bit several times, but none as hard as he's capable of. I want him to be happy in his new home. I'm going to try to help him to understand than humans aren't so bad. My joeys usually know that, when they leave. I've never had one like this.

I've been doing tent-time two-three times a day with Tombo. The difference it's made is INCREDIBLE in just 3 short days. He's calmed down so much, and isn't even biting anymore. He's nipping a little, but I think he's testing me. I just blow very gently and say no biting. He's doing GREAT...comes to me on his own. Tomorrow he goes to a new home, and it's a good thing, too, because I think I could bond with him really easily at this point. I feel sad that he's leaving, but I can't keep ALL of them!

don't blow on him, it will only aggravate him more... use the chit chit quickly,... it is the same sound mom makes to tell them no, follow that with a sharp and firm NO, but do NOT yell at him, just be firm.

Thanks. I will try that. He's coming along beautifully, tho. I can't believe how much better he's doing after only 3 days in the tent (I haven't used it in so long, I almost forgot I had it).
