Since Stryder has been in my care I have not put anything in the drop pan so I could keep a better eye on his output in case of diarrhea, etc. and have been emptying the drop pan and washing it out every day. Don't care what diet you have them on, if you leave dropped food, fesces and urine in there it will start to smell. Didn't like the idea of newspaper (the smell of wet newspaperpaper and couldn't see what was on it), puppy pads or similar things didn't seem to be great from what I have read. I decided to try the Carefresh and so far I am very pleased with it. Several days ago, I put enough in the drop tray to cover the bottom and it has very effectively controlled the odor. It's white so I can still see what's in the tray and it sure beats having to clean the tray every day. The only disadvantage I can see to it is that Stryder likes to check out anything new that's put in his cage - he rearranged some of it by reaching down through the bottom rack.

While I have never used the Care Fresh, I have used Puppy pads, and I thought they worked GREAT for me. They have baking soda in them to help absorb the smell and you can see everything on them to keep an eye on whats going on.

Glad to hear this is working out for you though.

Hi there,
I have used carefresh for over 5 years now and love it. The odor is not there like with the other items. My gliders also check it out, but then they throw it down and go play. I haven't tried the puppy pads, but i know several people have spoke about it on here and they seem to like using them. I don't use newspapers because yes when they get wet they do keep the odor lingering around and I can't stand that.
Just my input. Keep us posted on how you like the carefresh or if you find something better.

Srlb - maybe what I read about the pads were another kind of pad and not puppy pads. Seems they said they just held the moisture in and it didn't dry up or something like that.

Sweetgliders - 50 Gliders???? The CareFresh people must love you. My husband has a niece who lives in Claremore, OK - his sister used to live in Tulsa.

[:"green"]I used to use a combo of puppy pads on the bottom of the tray & CareFresh over the top of it. I found the combo worked great. The only problem was that the CareFresh was messy to clean up & change. Plus, little bits of food would get caught down in it and then the fruit flies would come. Yeck!
About two months ago, I read about using fleece pads & thought I'd try them out. I bought a bunch of $2.97/yard fleece at WalMart & made a bunch of double-layered fleece pads that perfectly fit the cage trays. Each day, I shake the pad clean of debris & then flip the pad over. I get two days use out of each pad, then just throw them in the washer & dryer for easy cleaning. They work great & don't smell at all... Very simple, much easier clean-up & quite inexpensive in the long-run. My vet came today to do my annual inspection (for USDA) and she liked them very much - thought they were a great idea...
Just my two cents worth on the subject...

Well now that's a great idea Suz....i think i like that idea better than carefresh and pads....So you just sew pads the size of the bottom pan...i like that idea alot better. If you don't mind i'd like to use it as well. Please and thank you!!

Also I'd like to add..most households get newspaper daily or weekly..we all know that after the newspapers are read, they are usually tossed to the garbage...so...I use newspaper to line my glider cage with. Cheap, comes in bulk, and like someone mentioned, like carefresh, with the fruit flies. Just make sure that your newspaper company uses vegetable ink

*I'd also like to add that I LOVE carefresh bedding, I use it with my rabbits, but I've tried it with my gliders, and prefer newspaper.

Just an update on how the CareFresh is doing in Stryder's drop tray. So far, so good. It is a bit tricky when pulling the drop tray out to empty (but I got that figured out) and there is very little cleaning to do to the tray. It is still much, much better than cleaning the drop tray every day and odor control is better. If I ever decided to go another route it would not be newspaper - might consider using used computer paper. To me the smell of newspaper dampened with urine is worse than nothing in the drop tray. I do have a daily supply of newspaper, but they do not go in the garbage - they go in a recycling bin. My husband tells everyone that I have saved a forest. Wish I had somewhere to take other recyclable items (plastic, batteries, etc.).

Almost forgot, don't know what CareFresh has to do with having fruit flies, but I haven't had a problem with them either before or since using it. Now that I have said that, they may descend upon me .

Anmaw,
I am so glad the CareFresh is working out for you. Like I said earlier I have been using it for around 5 years or more and I haven't ever had any problems with fruit flys. Just remember about every day to every other day check you pan/trays and pick out the clumps of fruit/food droppings and soiled CareFresh. Then around once a week or every other week (depends on your cage(s)) do a good solid cleaning of the cages & trays. Also remember you won't need awhole lot of CareFresh in the pan because it absorbs really well. So try not filling your tray so full.

I have tried the newspapers in the trays and they didn't work for me either. I couldn't stand the wet paper smell. But I know several people who do use the newspapers in their trays and don't have any problems with that as their pan fillers.

I might try the fleece pads someday. That sounds like a good idea. Yes,Anmaw the store I order my CareFresh from loves to see me coming, they order for me about 5-6 50 liter large bags each month. So I do go through alot of it, with all my gliders, but to me it's worth it.
