I recently bought some eucalyptus from Matt (Euc Products), thinking that I would have my 2 suggies by then. It turns out that I won't have them until the end of February. Can I freeze the leaves and branches? I don't know if they would thaw out mushy or not. I sent him an email about it but I haven't heard anything yet. Everything has been in the fridge since I got them a few weeks ago. So far, there's no mold/fungus issues.

I seriously doubt if after they have defrosted their viability will be lost.
I'm not sure though, so hopefully Matt will be able to let you know.
Sorry about the delay in getting your babies.

Yeah, it's kind of been driving me crazy waiting for them. No fault on anyone though. The current owner lives 4-5 hours away and what with weird weather, sickness, and jobs, we can't seem to connect sooner. I'm jealous of everyone else who already has theirs! At least my house will completely stocked with everything they could want or need. grin

I'm thinking a good rinse and pat dry would probably be a good idea before I freeze the leaves and branches, but I don't know if I should layer them with paper towels or do something else.

if matt gets ahold of you, via pm, could you please let me know if it would be ok to freeze euc's, i could do that myself then,in hopes that they would last longer.
i have some of those reynolds & ziplock bags that you suck the air out of, & i use those bags for my fruits & veggies, & they do last quite abit longer that way.

I freeze my euc. I just ran out last week and ordered more. I know I read somewhere that it is ok to freeze.

To keep the leaves viable longer, I've heard that many people submerge their leaves for a few seconds to "re-hydrate" them, and it really helps.

I have no reason to freeze our Euc leaves, but I did freeze some, a few times, to test out their resilency. They seemed to thaw out just fine, very close to their original condition.

Any other ideas/suggestions?
- Matt

I just thawed some that I ordered back in (I think) early January, might have been December. It was frozen right when I got it because I still had some that I was using. The gliders went bonkers for it, and it still has that wonderful euc aroma that the fresh stuff does laugh

I've noticed with mine, a batch that has been frozen for several months now, it smells great but it does seem to dry out really quickly. I'll have to try re-hydrating them to see if it makes a difference. My suggies aren't to thrilled with it once the branches are dry.

It's interesting that the little furrballs have different "tastes". We have a number of customers who get some fresh, some dried, and they've found that many gliders will ONLY chew on the Eucs after they are thoroughly dried. I guess the chewing, itself, is really good for them.

We can't control 'em, but we can sure love their uniqueness! heart
