One of my toys for my glider is a chain thing with ribbon and stuff and one of my glider's foot got twisted and stuck in the ribbon chain part somehow, and I managed to get him out but he isn't walking on that leg at all. He isn't picking at it or chewing it or anything I was just wondering what should I do? Should I take him to the vet tomorrow?

Did you remove the toy from the cage? If you haven't, do so now. Check his leg to see if there are any other wounds. Take your sugar glider to the vet ASAP!

Yes, take him to the vet ASAP! He could have an internal injury you can't see. Good luck! Let us know how he is!

yeah I'd do a vet check ASAP just to prevent him from starting to chew on it or further injuring it...keep us updated on how he is!

Your glider needs to go to the vet now. When gliders are injured the pain makes them think they are being attacked, and they bite the "attacking" part. It is called self mutiliation. It doesn't always happen, but often enough to be a concern. At least get him some pain meds until he can go to your regular vet and do a real good work up. Please let us know how he does.

Hmmm... this made me think about something...

In the horrifying event that a Sugar Glider was to break a bone, leg/arm... GOD FORBID!!... What can the vet do for him/her? Has this sort of thing ever happened to someone's glider? And what was the outcome?

This sort of experience/knowledge could eventually help someone that might ever have to deal with this sort of thing. (I pray it never happens to any glider, but just in case)

OKay so I watched him all night until about 3 AM and went to bed, he walked around for a while and started putting weight on it. Now its like nothing even happened! He is acting COMPLETELY normal, he didn't touch his leg even once. No chewing or anything. I did have him in a separate cage for a while but when he started walking on it again I put him back and monitered him from his big cage with his brother. The second I see him act funny I'm going to take him to the vet. I think he wasn't walking on it at first because he hadn't got the circulation back yet in his foot or something... Thank you for replying! If someone has something else to input please go ahead!

Eh, honeslty? I would do a vet check ASAP anyway because gliders are AMAZING at hiding injuries, many times until the injury has gotten much worse. It could very well be that he's all better and that it was a minor setback. However, rather to be safe than sorry and for your own peace of mind, a vet might want to look at him to rule out anything that isn't visible to the human eye....just my thoughts!

Could you possibly post a picture of the toy? If it is a potential hazzard to gliders we would all like to see.

I hope your little one is ok.

broken bones are handled several different ways depending on the break itself. Of course the most common concern is the self mutilating due to injury (not to be confused with the cloacal and base of the tail mutilation), but other concerns are nerve injury as well as necrosis. In the days of yesterday, all broken bones were treated by amputation, we have had a few gliders whose bones have healed, it really depends on the break itself, and a vet who is up to trying things other than what is found in the old papers. Amputation is still the most common treatment. There is a story on the realstories site about a glider named Nero (he belonged to Tess and old colt) his bone did heal.

his story can be read here
Nero & Nuba

and another named KIWI
Kiwi

but in spite of the success stories, there is still many vets who believe amputation is the only treatment.

alright we did make it to the vet's office and he is in perfect health! I was so relieved! When he got caught and I was helping him he was biting the heck outta me, I thought it was because he was in pain(which he probably was at the time) but it was probably also because he felt cornered and in trapped animal instinct. I'll try to get a picture of the toy to warn you fellow glider owners.

Glad to hear he's perfectly healthy. It's such a big relief to have the vet tell you that, but it's always better to be an overprotective Mommy (or Daddy) with our little furkids.

I'm glad to hear he's ok. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Do you have any pictures yet? I would really like to see this toy so we could try avoiding it, and hopefully other gliders won't get stuck in it...

alright I can't get a pic because my digital camera is being a menace at the moment(I think somebody in the house dropped it), but there was a ribbon tied to the plastic chain towards the top and the ribbon must have gotten caught on his nail as he was going up or something and then it got around the hook and thats how it happened, I think... just make sure your ribbons stay away from your hooks!

Can you tell us what type of ribbon was it? I use curling ribbon with cherrios strung on them and hoping that doesn't cause a problem. Was your ribbon the satin kind? Glad all is well.
