I have a vermiculture (making compost) going out in my garage of red worms. They look like the ones from your garden only smaller. Can gliders eat these? Does anybody know?

The only worms that I know of that gliders eat are mealworms, superworms and wax worms, but then again, I hesitated to give them mealies for a long time, because I was squeamish...lol

I'm not too enlightened on the topic of bugs, but I don't think my gliders would eat that kind of worm...I think they like the thrill of biting a crunchy mealie head off...lol

Sorry I'm not much help!

I wouldn't give those to mine. Dirt has too much bacteria and micro-organisms. The mealworms we feed are "farm" raised in beds with certain foods and vitamins for the gliders, birds...etc. JMO

Also, I've never yet heard of gliders eating regular worms..

Garden worms will kill most glider.

Think I would not give them any of those worms even if they would eat them. As Badgersmom said there is too much danger of contamination. Same goes for any wild caught insects. Stick with the worms from a reputable dealer like Grubco. We only feed the large mealworms and they are more of a treat than a part of the diet.

Do you have any sites/science to back that up? I would love to on it.

No! Not red wigglers! toxic! Those kind specifically, too! I thought I posted a big no-no list somewhere just recently... hmmm... *looks*

In terms of nightcrawlers (i.e. Lumbricus sp.), I'm sure gliders would eat them, but the dangers of parasites is high in earthworms (esp. the parasites known as nematodes, also microscopic worms... ew). Plus, if you're one concerned about pesticides, you should be even more so concerned with pesticides and earthworms, because their mucous-laden skin in specially designed to diffuse nutrients and oxygen/CO2 through the epidermis and into and out of its body. Run-off pesticides enter worms like you won't believe, even more so than any outdoor insect that may come in contact with pesticides. Eathworms love grass, including grass that has been mowed from a golf course which are regularly sprayed with pesticides...

[:"red"] Just to add that as a rule nobody feeds any real worms. [/]

Mealworms, Superworms and Waxworms really aren't WORMS they are LARVE (they turn into beetles).
