Ok, I am really worried. The gliders I have are all rescues and are related except the parents. When I got the gliders they were all being housed together. I seperated them as soon as I could, but I am afraid it was too late. The only little girl (in a cage by herself) has something sticking out of her pouch. It looks like skin, and is not wet or bloody. I assumed that if she had given birth to some joeys that she would at least be wet around her pouch. I will try to get pictures of her pouch so you can see. I am very concerned, because if she is pregnant then the joeys will be incest. Do people not think about this sort of thing?!?! Why would someone just leave them all together like that! I dont even know how old the female is! Is it going to kill her. I know she will probably kill her babies. It is still painful to think of that even knowing they may be deformed. Oooooo, poor snug bug. ARGH!!!!

First of all, breathe. A very important thing!!!

Now, lets go over this a little...

What exactly does this look like? sounds more like her pouch may be inverted? It is good that it is not bloody. That is a big plus. It would only be wet if the joeys were just going into the pouch and they make their trail for them.

How old or about how old is she?

Quote:

Do people not think about this sort of thing?!?!

Some people dont think about it or think because they are family they wont breed. Others do it intentionally.

Quote:

Unfortunately, some people just dont have the money or the thought to seperate them. You stated they were rescues so possibly the previous owners just couldnt afford or they truly didnt *know* any better. You would be surprised at how many will tell you that it is ok for gliders to breed with each other even though related.

Quote:

Is it going to kill her. I know she will probably kill her babies.

Will it kill her? No, more than likey not. Never heard of one dying due to this. Will she kill the joeys? That is possible if there is something wrong with them that she senses. However, she may just have a healthy joey. Just because it is possible they inbred really does not mean you will wind up with a deformed joey.

I would recommend getting her a cage mate though if she does have joeys in her pouch. She will need some help taking care of them if they make it. A neutered male would be the best.

I hope this helps ease your mind a little. I know how scary this thought can be. Pics would be a big help if you can get some for us.

There are breeders (and I use the term loosly) that actively practice inbreeding to accomplish desired traits...doesn't take a genius to know that inbreeding in any species is a bad idea...but I believe (and Please if anyone knows or feels differetly- Correct me) In the animal kingdom if it is only the first generation of inbreeding, chances are that the babies could very well be fine. I think it is generally when there are generation upon generation of inbreeding that you will see more defects and abnormalaties. Again, I could be wrong and I'm not saying it's a Good thing, but she very well could carry an inbred joey to maturity and it could be ok. Thing is that if you don't know which one of the males is the father...you can't have that glider neutered and put him back in with her to help care for the joeys. With you just getting them and now seperating her completely...she probably won't be able to care for it/them properly and they might not make it for that fact alone. If the breeding process and the birthing process didn't kill her then carrying joeys probably won't kill her as long as you up her protien and calcium. You really are in a catch 22 situation and there is not right answer. You're just going to have to let nature take it's course, and (I'm sure you already know this) make sure she is unable to breed with any of her family members again. Unbelievable that the person who had them was so ignorant as to have them all together, it's a shame that this little one had to go through this You also might want to consider taking her to a vet to confirm that she is pregnant, she may have a pouch infection or someting..though the only thing I can think of that would be a skin like thing hanging out of a pouch would be a joey...and if that's the case then she might be farther along then you think. I'm so sorry you both have to go through this.

Well, you cant see very well but maybe well enough to tell. It looks like the skin is coming to a point with a hole in the middle. Some of the fur looks like it might be inside. This must be the skin of her pouch? Is she possibly cleaning it to prepare for birth? Oh, I hope she is ok. We are in such a tight spot right now with money. I cant afford to get my males neutered right now either. I wonder what its like to be rich

The only thing is, she has had a completely flat belly up until this point. It just looks like wrinkled skin with a hole in the middle. The pair just had a joey on the 14th of this month and it was very obvious that the mom was pregnant. This female has not had a bump or nothing. I have been keeping a close eye on her ever since we got them because I have been so worried that this would happen. The skin is not sticking out as much in the picture as it was before. Is this normal to see before or after delivery?

Ok, she just let me hold her and look at it. Its definitely the skin of her pouch. She has licked the fur all around it and the skin is showing. I am afraid to ask......is she preparing for birth?

If that were the case I'd expect to see a trail from her pouch down, since it's only her pouch I'd guess she has something else going on, it's hard to tell from this end though... I'd take her to the vet.

From what you're describing - the skin on the inside of her pouch sticking out around the edges etc, it sounds like she MIGHT have had a joey and possibly pulled it. After my female pulled her joey there was skin (like what you're describing) that stayed slightly inverted like that for about a week. Just keep an eye on her. You'll see lumps if she's pregnant, if not - you're good to go since she's seperated from the rest of her family now.
