#782066 - 05/21/09 11:02 AM Pickle died after surgery!!!!

I'm devastated. Pickle was neutered 2 days ago and the surgery went well. Afterwards he did SM some, so they put a collar on him. The vet wanted to watch him for additional day just to make sure he was doing well before coming home. This morning they called at 9AM to tell me he passed away!!! I'm so upset. This was an elective surgery, I feel so guilty. They have no idea why he died. They are going to do a necropsy later today. I trust the vet. She did my other male glider last year with no problem at all. He was such a little angel. The sweetest of my 3. I will miss him so much...
Edited to add from further along in the thread:

I am so sorry! It is a scary thing when we coose to do something that is supposed to make life better for them and it does not! I'm glad they are doing the necropsy. Obviously there was something wrong. Please know you are in my thoughts and post what they find. It may help another!

I am so very sorry about Pickle - Things like that just happen but it's so sad any how - I guess that's why Junior is now 4 and I'm scared to have him neutered - I know that only happens once in awhile but I'm scared of loosing my little boy - That's probably why he is a lone glider and I haven't put a male in with him - I know he needs to have a play mate but I really wanted to get him a girlfriend but I was so scared of having him neutered I just couldn't bring myself to get another one - I'll just have to get him a male play mate because I'm too scared -

I am so sorry..........................he and my Holly crossed the bridge together today. her death I sort of expected..............his sounds so sudden. this was not your fault. Something else had to have been going on. I dont think I have ever heard of a glider dying after a neuter......................these gliders are so difficult to diagnose and treat. I applaud you for getting a necropsy done. (((((HUGS))))) Godspeed little one.

I am so sorry for your loss. I hope the necropsy can find something to help you understand what happened. This was not your fault in any way, you were doing what many of us have done for our boys and there is no way to know why he couldn't handle it. hug2

Words may not bring back your little Pickle, but I hope you can get some comfort from our good wishes! I'll be looking for an update on this unfortunate event.
IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT!! You elected the surgery because it is a SMART choice... how could you know?

Just wanted to give an update. The vet said Pickle's liver was extremely abnormal and surrounded with fluid. She thinks he died from liver failure after the medications and stress of surgery. She suspects liver cancer. She took pictures of everything and sent them to my e-mail, but I can't look at them. She took tissue samples of everything and the path report will be back in about 2 weeks.
Thanks again for kind words.

I understand your NOT wanting to open those e-mails...I dare to say that I'd be right there beside you saying "No thanks, I'll pass".

On another perspective (for the sake of helping other vets learn more about gliders & medical issues), would you and your vet be willing to share the pictures with folks like Dr. Tristan and Dr. Walsh (and maybe even post them on the vets Info Network)? Many efforts are underway right now to find out more about suggies....and it seems that there are a LOT of posts here lately about liver failure and liver cancer.

The legacy of Pickles can live in with what other vets may learn...

Again, I'm so sorry about what happened. hug2 Remember to cry when you need to, it helps with the grieving process.

I'm so sorry to hear about Pickle!

My vet does blood work before any surgical procedure on my cats or dogs, but not on gliders.

I wonder if some sort of routine, pre-op blood work should be something we need to consider?

We buried Pickle today. upset The vet did a very nice job with his remains. He was tucked into a nice box and looked very peaceful. She put the rainbow bridge story on the inside and a beautiful quote on the outside. I still haven't looked at the pictures of the necropsy. I have a regular check up for my other 2 gliders on June 1, so maybe I'll look at them with the vet. I'll post again when we get the path reports back and I will send the info and pictures to all the researchers.

I miss you little pickle gangel
