I always make an effort to give my gliders a variety of fruits and vegetables. But I read somewhere on here the other day that too much variety causes picky gliders. So my question is twofold. One, is this true? Should I only give my gliders a few kinds of vegetables? Second, if this is the case, which ones are best for constant feeding?

Miriam, I think the too much variety is mostly for gliders that aren't eating, from what I've read on the posts here. Some gliders that won't eat do much better if only offered a couple of fruits and veggies each night rather than a smorgasboard. So far I think most feed their gliders the frozen vegetable mix, minus the lima beans, that come in the package at the grocery. I don't know which fruits are best, mine is too picky and I have to give him the fruit smoothies for him to eat any fruit at all.
Hope this helps some.

Yes, gliders biologically are specialized feeders, and will be comfortable feeding on a familiar set of food items. I add nutritional variety to my glider's diet by varying the types of fruits and veggies in the bowl every night, but I tend to use the same set of fruits and veggies, and I have them on a sort of cycle, I suppose.

Every now and then I'll introduce a new fruit or veggie here and there. They usually accept it willingly!

Since we have taken gliders out of their element and it is impossible to duplicate their life and diet in the wild the diets for captive gliders in the US have been created. Good or bad that is debatable. But we try to feed them a controled diet so they eat what WE think is healthy for them. As a whole captive gliders seem to be healthier and live longer since these diets have been developed. When gliders first came to the US they were fed an assortment of random foods and there were a lot more health issues and early deaths. By offering too much selection you stray from the controled diets and revert back to where we were fifteen years ago. I am not trying to tell you that anyone has come up with the perfect diet for captive gliders. Only saying it is in the best interest to stay within the range of one of the diets that has proven to be best for gliders.

when it comes to fruit/veggies for our babies I use a lot over time, but only about 3-4 of each in the mix I make up each week (most of the time) sometimes I have a little bit of something left in the freezer from a prior applicationa dn they get more variety but most of the time they don't seem to be picky about stuff other then some of our gliders won't eat carrots if thats the only vegetable or one of 2 after 2/3 nights! they leave them beside their bowl!

As far as peas and corn go, none of our kids have gotten tired of those. Bonnie loves carrots, she's the only one that will grab a carrot first. They pick and choose different nights to eat green beans. I offer a variety of things, the only things that stay the same is the mealies, water...lol Ours also love a lot of different fruits, so I can rotate those easily..they get 3 kinds each night and eat all of it sometimes and sometimes leave a tiny bit. (we put acacia gum on the fruit..hehe..sneaky) They get nectar a few times a week too and gobble it all up. Today, I'm making a concoction of fruit, yogurt, juice and whatever else I think to put in it..for smoothie treat. I've always fed them a variety, in our case they like ALOT of different things instead of being picky. None of ours are picky...so far. LOL

Forgot to mention before I get hit on the head..lol and Of course their chicken, turkey and staple food of ZooKeeper's with Bee pollen sprinkled on it every night.
