Does anyone have any ideas on how to help a 3 legged glider get around? I just got him and he was a rescue. (you can read his story in glider health)I am planning to put up a bunch of hammocks, and such to help him, but I was wondering if you guys had any ideas? He just has his leg amputated on thursday and is having trouble getting around.

You might want to contact Mary and Charlie, Angie H or Queenduck as I believe all three of these have three legged gliders. I think they would be the best at helping you out. Others that have three legged gliders may be along soon but I do know it really doesnt slow them down much once they are used to only having three limbs.

Is it his front or back leg? Victor has 3 legs also. He's missing a back foot. I was scared to death ..but he gets around (seriously) better than any of our gliders! Nothing stops him..he LOVES his wodent wheel. We couldn't let him have the Stealth wheel though cause the stump could get caught in the mesh.

Also, we got some of that black screen from the pet section (the stuff you use for pouches) and made a canopy about an inch off the bottom of the cage floor and attached it with zip ties in the corners and sides so that 1. in case he did slip..the screen would catch him
2. his stump can't get hung up in the bottom of the cage wire.

So far..no problems whatsoever though! He's a tiger! I mean..a monkey glider! lol

One other thing some people do in our situations is to turn the cage on it's side so that it is longer rather than taller. We also keep the food dishes close to the bottom. Hope this helps some

You really need to treat him as normal as possible. Think physical therapy instead of handicapped. I'm sure you will be quite surprised at how normal he is.

I have two gliders that are both missing their back left leg, one caught in a bad pouch and the other came with no reason. They both had their amputations before the came to me.

One got around great from the time she came to me, but her amputation happened about a year before I got her. The little boy, who showed up here with no reason the back leg was gone, would drag his bottom around, but after several months, he figured out how to get around on it better and is near normal. They only glide about a foot and only if they are sure they are safe.

The only thing I do different for them is place their foot at the bottom of the cage, so they can sit and relax and eat, not have to hang for the side of the cage (watter bottle is at the bottom too) also, make sure you use a cage with small squares instead of bars, this gives them much more to hold onto or use a rept. They like both. I also add lots of thick ropes, big hammocks, things that may be bulkier then some toys out there.

Best of luck to you and the little guy, you'll find he will be fine, it is normal that it's going to take him time to get used to his new body.
