I brought Peanut and Teddy home on Sunday evening or rather the previous mom brought them to me. I have had them for only 24 hours at this point. I came home last night and took Peanut and Teddy out of their cage to love on them. Peanut and Teddy's last owner had to seperate them because Peanut (on two occasions)tore Teddy's shoulder (by her neck) open. She said that she did it to the point that it was the size of a quarter. She gave me some silver sulfate (I think that is the medication's name)to put on it twice a day. I looked in their pouch and saw that she has done it again. It was healing from the last time and I didn't know that they were stressed enough that Peanut would do it again. I can see under the skin and down to the muscle. I am worried and the vet won't take her until today so what can I do to help her? Will she need stitches? The last time it happened, I was told that she just put the medicine on her shoulder and it healed. I think that from what I have read that this would be a good question for CHARLIE H. I have seperated them and have put Teddy in a travel cage since I have nothing else bigger. I need to get a cage and was going to do that but now I have to spend the money on the vet. I don't mind the money being spent but want to get her a cage big enough for her to be comfortable. Can she wear an e-collar but that would be where the hole is located? Any advice would be welcome.

Racheal,
This sounds like a mating wound and they can be very nasty. YES they need to be seperated or he will only make it worse. An E-collar isn't necessary as it is where she can't reach it. The silvadine (the ointment) will help it heal but she may need an oral anti biotic like baytril to help prevent infection. She will need to be kept seperate from him until it completely heals or he will just groom it open again. He should be neutered before they go back together. Since this has happened three times now, it is obviously that he is just to agressive in his mating habits and poses a risk to her health and life.

It will probably take 2-3 weeks for this wound to heal. During this time, you can keep their cages side by side so they can still talk and let them have closely supervised play times but don't let him groom the wound.

I suggest a trip to the vet to discuss antibiotics. Then keep a close eye on it. If it starts oozing or if it developes a bad odor (trust me, you'll know when you smell it) get her back to the vet as those are indications of infection and the wound might have to be seriously cleaned.

I went through this with Whisper. Her wound was infected. Lucy said that the first vet visit, the vet did a culture of the wound and it had e-coli bacteria. Antibiotics were given. It scabbed over but the infection got worse. Back to the vet where she was put under and the wound reopened and cleaned. A new culture was done and this time, no e-coli but another bacteria. I got Whisper the day after the second vet visit. I had to rinse the wound 3 times a day with a betadine solution, put ointment on it, (the ointment I got from my vet after getting here here) and give her oral antibiotics and pain meds. She made a full recovery. During her healing time, I had her mate Sebastian neutered and there has been no more problems.

Best of luck hun and keep us posted. If I can do anything to help, just let me know.

She'll need to get in to see the vet as soon as possible. She may need an antibiotic to prevent infection. Until you can get her in, I would recommend putting some antibiotic ointment on the wound. Also, be sure that she stays warm and gets plenty of fluids. You don't want her to get dehyrated in addition to her injury.
With the wound being a prior injury, it may be that Peanut was grooming Teddy and reopened it. Keep us updated on how she is doing, and what the vet has to say.

They are both females and they seem to be happy together. I just don't understand how Peanut would not know when to quit grooming. I am going to clean it with a betadine solution and the ointment until the vet visit.

You might want to contact AngieH as she will probably know a vet that can/will help.

IMHO...I'd seriously think of seperating the two girls and finding each a new cagemate...I too first thought that it must be an aggressive breeding issue...but since they're bot females...I think you may just have an over aggressive alpha female that for whatever reason occasionally takes things too far. Personally I wouldn't have sold these two together to anyone...it also concerns me that they were sold to you with one that has a healing wound...it really makes me wonder why she couldn't hold onto the injured one till it healed before selling her...Again this is only my Opinion, and you actually Being IN the situation is quit different than my interpretation of what I'm reading...I'm sure that your good judgement will play a huge vactor in this as well. Good Luck with your new Suggies, and keep us posted if you're able, on this little girls condition!

I am surprised to read they are both females as this definitely sounds like a mating wound… I have been through this just this past weekend with Sage, I ran out an got a second cage, luckily I found a great vet he took her right in, cleaned the wound and sent us home baytril oral antibiotic and then an ointment ( can’t remember name right now) with instructions to clean twice a day and administer meds as advised…

I had already decided that Mango needed to be neutered, as he is just to aggressing in wanting to mate…. You might just want to check and make sure that Peanut is a girl, this would is specific to mating attempts…

I checked Peanut and Teddy both when they came to me Sunday. They were both girls. They both let me touch their tummies and rub them. I saw both pouches and they just ate their mealies and laid on their backs. They are both soooo sweet. I love them already. The previous owner was quite anxious to get them to me. She said that she had a new kitten that demanded much of her time. I understand, I guess. She is a very nice person that sent over ALL their stuff, large cage, small travel cage, insectivore, wodent wheel, bonding pouches, toys, water bottles, bowls, everything for $50. She was on here as PeanutandTeddy. She is a super sweet lady and the wound was just scabbed and healing quite nicely when they came. She did tell me that they needed to be seperated soon to avoid it happening again. I planned on doing it on the 30th when I got paid or when my ex-husband sent his next child support payment. I just got finished buying a formal for my 15 year old to go to the Winter Ball this weekend and didn't have the cash on hand. Anyone know where I could get a cheap but good quality cage? I don't want her to be in the little travel cage for very long.

[:"green"]Let me relate my experience and maybe it will help you... My DaisyMae had an open wound on her shoulderblade that was inflicted by Coobah during mating over a year ago. I separated Coobah from DaisyMae & housed her with Mareki (her daughter). Her daughter continually overgroomed the wound. It would start to heal, then Mareki would open it again. I finally, two months ago, had to bring DaisyMae into the vet to have the wound debrided and stitched because Mareki had really gone too far & the wound was down to the subcutaneous level. Mareki was moved to a separate cage. DaisyMae tore the stitches out within two weeks & reopened the wound with her hind foot while grooming. Back in to the vet for further debriding and more stitches. It finally is healing properly... It will be at least another month before they'll be able to be put together again.
From what you have described, it sounds like a minimum of oral antibiotics & topical Silvadine (SSD) ointment are needed... Your vet will be able to give you a definitive answer.

Debriding is taking off the dead/damaged tissue down to healthy tissue so that it can heal better and more rapidly.

I feel like an idiot for not knowing that. She looks better today. The vet said that she was doing good but could get an infection. To make sure that I put on the silvadine and give her the antibiotics on time. I am doing that. He said that she would probably tear out the stitches and if I put an e-collar where she has the wound, it would rub on the wound and she might SM due to the pain. I need to clip their nails tonight. All 6 of them. This should be fun.

An Ecollar with a wound in a location like that wouldn't be a good idea...all it would do is aggravate the problem. If it's the other glider messing with it, just keep them as neighbors until she's completely healed--that way they can still talk and interact, but the other glider won't be able to cause any more damage. And they could have supervised play time together. You also might want to ask for a painkiller like Torb..then she won't notice it so much and is less likely to mess with it or the stitches. At least until healing is well under way. . SM is a direct result of pain or discomfort. Eliminate the pain, and the odds of further self inflicted damage reduce dramatically. Something to consider, anyway.
