I know in Australia in the winter time it only gets about as low as like 60-65 degrees. If this is wrong, please correct me.

1. What is the highest (heat wise)temp you can keep your glider room, degrees? before having to cool it down some.

2. what is the lowest (cold wise) temp your glider room can be before having to warm it up?

I'm trying to get a minimum and maximum temp base your glider room can be so they suggies are comfortable w/o having to adjust the temp or adjust their sleeping pouches and cage covers.

The hottest I ever let my glider room get is around 85, and that is because my air condition broke last night. Normally I have mine around 70-75 and during the winter I have an automatic heater that is set at 80.

I recently moved the glider room down to our finished basement and the temp in the room stays around 68. The gliders are in double layer pouches and seem to be fine with it. They are all very active all night! I'm thinking I may have to get a space heater come winter, cuz it does get colder in the basement here in Michigan.

It got down to 28 degrees here last week during the night and we are on the coastline of Victoria so we don't normally get that low..usually around 36 during the night in winter. We do have wild sugar gliders in our neighbourhood so they do well within these temperatures providing they are in a a colony situation which is how they maintain a good bodyheat. One or two gliders could not possibly survive if it got too chilly.

It's "warm" here tonight... 48 degrees here at the moment.

Oh I wanted to add though, wild gliders CAN survive these low temperatures for several reasons.

1) They are acclimatised to it
2) They utilise their colony instincts to share their body heat and maintain the heat in their sleeping hollows.
3) Prior to Winter in Fall, they build up their body fat and become quite chunky. This enables them to survive cold winters. Come Spring and Summer they are all nice and trim again.
4. The dynamics of the colony is structured so that in Winter time, the colony all normally sleep together. In the hotter months, the gliders restructure their colony into smaller family groups so they are able to bear the hot weather here.

Gliders singly and in pairs, and gliders not properly acclimatised to these low temperatures would not survive the low Winter temperatures that wild gliders experience here in Australia. You would not expect that gliders used to a constant temperature range to be handle dramatic changes in temperatures if they are not acclimatised first. This would also be applicable to glider room temperatures.

My own colony of gliders live outside as wild gliders do. They were born outside, have appropriate housing and live as a colony. During Winter they all sleep in one of 5 nestboxes and then in Summer, they split into smaller groups and sleep in all of the nestboxes.

I have a pair of gliders in the house - if I put them outside right now in the current Winter climate, they would probably be dead in a couple of days simply because they are acclimatised to a constant warm indoor temperature. Being only two of them also, they would not be able to build up enough body heat in a nestbox to keep them both warm.

Wow Marz, that must be amazing to look outside and see Sugar Gliders! Thank you so much for posting that. It's about 73 at my house/where my Glider is in the day time and around 69 at night. I don't think she's ever had a problem.

The warmest my glider room gets is about 85 degrees and the lowest would be about 70 degrees.

I just wanted to say that I meant absolutly no offense by what I said. I wasn't aware that you were actualy in Australia. That must be a neat place to live.

My vet recommends no lower than 70 degrees F and no higher than 85 degrees F.

My place can get chilly in winter. We have a ceramic heat lamp (emits just heat, no light) OUTSIDE the cage that is aimed in on one pouch. There are two pouches in the cage. The gliders can choose the "warmer" or "cooler" pouch and thermoregulate based on their needs. This setup has worked really well for us thumb

Thanks Jen, I think those are good min & max of temp to work with.

Someone gave me this other option for heat. It's made for animals and lasts up to 12 hours. It also comes with a cover so they are protected from direct heat.

You didn't offend anyone, I just figured you didn't realize what the situation was and wanted to let you know. hug2

That must be so neat to see them running around outside. I was also wondering about the temperature for their room . It is humid and nasty here in CT so I have the airconditioner running for all the rooms except Harley and Taz's room is around 72 degrees. If I think it is getting warm in there I open the door for a few and let the ac cool the room alittle.

I would love to look out my window and see suggies running up and down the trees. I must say though I would want to let all them into my house.

Thanks for sharing Marz.

Can you get pics of the native ones and post them? I would love to see native ones.

Do you find the gliders choose one pouch over the other with the heat lamp on??

I keep my glider room between 68-72 degree's. I use a small heater in the winter and air conditioning on the hot humid days. I find they come out and play more when they are 68-70 degree's.

Charmed I have used those heat discs for joeys. They work good for that kind of thing but I am not sure about them in the cages with gliders. They can chew on them and the stuff inside is very toxic. I would not trust them in a cage unsupervised. JMO

I was wondering Marz would you be able to show us some pictures of your set up and those gliders of yours? Maybe start a new thread.

Thank you.
