Ok its been about a week now and it is getting worse my male (Link) keeps trying to mate with Zelda and she keeps nipping at him. Last night it got so bad that he was licking her underside while she was climbing the cage and he pushed her so hard that she lost her grip and fell 4 feet!!! So here are my questions:

1) Can a male go into heat or does he just get really horny or can he just smell that she is about ready to go into heat?
2) Does a non nutered males scent glande get stronger if he wants to mate?
3) Can the male hump things in the cage?
4) How long can his penis stay out before I need to go see a vet? (It comes out at 15 mins at time then goes away then comes back out about 2 hours later)

We are going to talk to the vet mid next month and see how much it is to get him neutered and the pros and cons of it.

It sounds to me like he is just being a boy. Males don't go into heat that I'm aware of. They are aware of when females near them are in heat though. This can have an effect on their behavior.

The odor can get stronger as their glad gets more use. So, if they are marking a lot or really worked up, the smell can certainly increase.

Males can hump anything...including hands as I learned from firsthand experience. crazy

So long as the penis isn't out for more than an hour and is retracting, you should be fine.

I have six neutered males and they are all wonderful pets. I can't say enough good things about fixed males! The smell is less, they chill out a lot once fixed, the territorial craziness goes way down too, etc. I think you should highly consider having your males neutered. thumb

Trust me, she won't keep nipping at him. It's not called animal instinct for nothing. If she isn't already preggers, she will be within the next 3-5 days. I have all my males neutered and I'm glad I do because the smell alone is so much better. I think my males have much less chance of getting cancer too.

No, some actually use some disgression. I have one pair that had a total of 12 babies. Never made a sound when mating. Other's OMG you would think it was WW3 going on in that cage with all the fussing they do.

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
