I think this question was asked before, but I don't know what the answer was. I am pretty sure it was no.

I've never heard of an incidence of glider scratches causing joint paint/swelling.... I know that some people are more allergic to them than others and will get lines (the scratches) that swell up... but I've never heard of anything like catscratch fever...

http://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/diseases/catscratch.htm

it's caused by a bacteria - so I suppose if your suggie was somehow infected by the bacteria it would be possible - but I can't imagine where your suggie would pick it up from

I suppose it's not impossible. I looked online and read that "Also, some patients with confirmed cases of cat scratch disease have had no contact with cats. Cases of CSD have been confirmed in patients who have been scratched by dogs, crab claws, goats, squirrels, porcupine quills, cactus spines, and barbed wire." From what I know of cat scratch fever, it is self-limiting and goes away with or without treatment. With hand scratches, you may have a swollen lymph node in your armpit. I've been scratched recently trying to separate two fighting female gliders and fortunately did not have any reaction. I hope you bounce back and don't have the problem again. Moira

Well my arm is swollem from the l-bow to my fingers and my arm really hurts. I have had my gliders for two years and have had scratches many times but never this.. I hope this is not from my gliders. I love those boogers to death and I could not imagine not getting to hold my babies every night. I am just scared the doctor put me on antibotic for 4 weeks because he said it could cause me some serious troubles.

Wow..I am sorry this is happening dear. You let me know if you need me to help with them. I would be very sad if this is what caused it.

what do the scratches themselves look like? not to second guess a doctor - but 4 weeks of antibiotics is pretty extreme for most infections...

I still don't think it could be from your gliders unless the bacteria is already in your house or if they were playing outside (hence, as someone pointed out, there are other ways to come in contact with it)

In my opinion, a "yes" or "no" to your question about CSD is not the help you seek. What to do (how to treat it) and how to decide how to proceed is more helpful. Long before we identified the causative organism in Cat Scratch Disease, we suspected it was a bacterial infection and used antibiotics. It became clear which ones worked and which didn't. That experience helped make up the indirect evidence of an infectious cause, as opposed to allergic, etc. Cat Scratch Disease used to even be called Cat Scratch Fever, but was renamed - not all victims became febrile. But infection seemed likely, and antibiotics seemed prudent care. So, a plan of treatment without proof of causation has many prior examples.

Many tick bites cause similar signs. Even the ones that test negative for CSD, and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, and Lyme Disease present with lymph node swelling, lymphangitis and findings that make one believe some germ is present, we just don't know which one. It wasn't that long ago that Lyme Disease and Lyme Arthritis was figured out.

Because there are a lot more cats than gliders, it may take a lot longer to determine things such as this. Just as not every cat gives their human pet CSD, not even glider gives their feeder such a present. If you culture a glider paw, I guarantee you some bacterial load will be present. Many of the stool content bacteria will be represented in what is recovered. Not every glider will contain the exact same things growing there. The only sure thing is that claws are not sterile, and germs live there. If you are showing signs of a localized infection (and this sounds more like infection than a localized allergic reaction) I would think your physician would want to treat it as such. It is a good bet that you will not be able to recover a bug to identify. If you do, be sure and post it here, and email me if you would be so kind. If you get any abscess that drains or sores that drain, culture them. Use special selective media to be sure and find it.

There are a lot of germs like CSD, even if it isn't Bartonella henselea. Your signs are quite real, and would seem to beg to be addressed. Whether you can prove Bartonella and CSD, or you have a similar situation with a Bartonella-like germ, it isn't likely to affect what you do (or at least what I would do). Another interesting endeavor might be to draw blood now and save it, and in 2 months draw blood again, and run the comparison for acute and convalescent serology and see what you find.

Thanks everyone for the replies. the joints in my finger are still alittle sore. My hand and arm are NOT swollen today. I am not going to worry about. I love my gliders and and I will just be more careful in getting scratches. I don't think my gliders did this. My opinion is i have a pinch nerve.. How knows... thanks again
