well.. it all started a while ago. Tiki, was my first glider, who was absolutely an angel. She was my only glider at that time. And everyday before I would hold her, I would always place her on a paper towel to do her business, but while she was unrinating and creating stool, she would start to bark, and I always had thought, "awww.. she misses me when I leave her alone", and I would rejoin her until she was finished, but soon enough.. those barks turned into cries of pain.. and it went on like that for some time. And over a period of who knows how long, we took her to several vets, begging for them to tell us what was wrong with her. One vet told us it was a minor injury on her backbone, but it was quickly healing, and we were happy to hear this. But surely.. this wasn't what was causing her to cry. We soon after, took her to another vet, and he found out that it wasn't the injury.. but that she had a very serious blockage.. so we did anything we could to flush away whatever was in there, anywhere from laxidote, to enimas. It was horrable.. and she ended up spending much time at the vets. And her cries never stopped. Even till this day, I can hear her cries of pain ringing in my ears. One day I even thought she was gonna die in my hands.. so I held her, and slept with her..

Sure enough though, she did not die, she stuck around for me.. at one point.. I even told her, that she could leave me if the pain was to great. But she stuck on.. and didn't want to die.. She ate and drank.. and throughout her pain, tried to act normal. But I hated seeing her in pain..
on a Wednesday, she went to the vet, and he looked at her.. he didn't think there was anything they could do..
And I cried over her in the vets office.. and said.. she had to go.. I couldn't stand it anylonger. Having a glider in pain.. is worse then a dead one. So he told me, I have Thursday off, so you could spend tonight and tomorrow saying goodbye, and she could be put down Friday. But I told him, "no... she.. she needs to go today" So I kissed her on the cheek, and cried over her for a few minutes, and handed her over, but she grabbed my finger.. and she wouldn't let go, her claws digging into my fingures. And I shall never forget those sad longing eyes...

That day, she was put down, and the vet did an autopsy on her.. he said that even if surgery was done.. that this small pouch inside her would keep filling up, and that she was to weak..
While she was put down.. the vet cried, along with all of his assistants, because this tiny little creature tore into their hearts aswell..
Tiki, this just goes to show you how much you were.. and still are missed.. I love you.

[:"green"] [/] As I sit here in memory, wondering what else could go wrong. I remember the one thing I was told. The one thing that stuck through thick and thin with me... the three simple words - "Never Give Up" No matter what happens, your darling Tiki will always be within your heart. Depression may strike, sadness too. I couldn't relate to it, for I never knew... But I do remember your actions before and after the fact. Those many sleepless nights spent talking to her, and in memory. The feeling of love will never cease my dear. Things don't fade in time. They will only grow stronger. Never have I seen a bond so loving and true. May she remain blessed. For I know you are too.

As I sit here with tears running down my face, I think...what a beautiful story. You are an awesome writer. I was/am with you in your worry, fear, pain and sorrow. I know Tiki is a wonderful inspiration to you, and you do honor to her memory. She was adorable. It is obvious you two had a special bond.
I am so sorry she is gone.
Would you do one more thing for me? Would you share a happy story?
I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Maggie is the one who uses the computer the most. Between work and my family I don't log on every day. But I would love to read more about Tiki. I look forward to it.
Thank you for sharing.

I was just thinking.......may I tell you a little story about Horace? He is my first Glider. From reading these posts I have come to realize that not only is he special because he's my sugar baby, he is my first sugar baby. I doubt he will be my last.
I love this little guy. I can't wait to see him when I get home from work. Otherwise, he pretty much goes where I go. Well, I had an appointment (not medical) the other day and I brought him with me in his bonding pouch. Normally he doesn't make a peep. For some reason he decided to crab while there were four other people sitting near me. All heads turned in my direction. Eyebrows went up and mouths dropped open. One lady said, "What was that?" I shifted nervously in my seat to give myself time to think....."Um, hunger pains." I answered. No one believed me, but Horace went back to being his silently snoozing self, so no one said anything more. All I can add is that I am very happy that I didn't bring him in my bra like I usually do! (It was a hot day and I wanted him to have an apple slice while I ran errands.)
I love reading and writing posts. I could sit here all day. Unfortunately, I have housework, laundry and bills to take care of.
Thanks for letting me share.

thank you, lol.

that is a great story. I remember when I used to take Meka and Tiki to the petstore with me. One or both of them would rest on my head, while the other in my shirt or on my shoulder. I love the look on the peoples face as they see these odd looking creatures. And when people ask me what a sugarglider is, I say this, "a marsupial, with the looks of a chipmunk and flying squirrel combined" This ussually creates a good picture.
But here is a miracle story of Tiki, a happy one as requested--

One day, about 2 years from her death. (We did not have Meka, my other glider at the time) We purchased a cage at a garage sale, and made a quick check for any loose places, and there was none, or so it seemed. We placed the cage outside on my enclosed back porch and placed lots of toys and things for her to do. The cage looked like so much fun, I wished that I could go in there with her. It was a great size to! I was so excited for her! However, this was her first time being out of my room.. and she was not used to this. And that night I watched her for a while, and fed her. and The next morning I went to look for her before I got ready for school. I dug through all of her hanging pouches, and her branches, and her house.. her box. Her everything. I tore apart the whole cage. Suddenly, my heart stopped, and it seemed to drop, slowly, but surely. I was so so very afraid. I ran to my pool, hoping to god that I would not spot her dead, but she was not in there. She was not in the pool cover, she was no where. I ran to my parents, crying, I lost my baby for good this time.
We looked forever, and I was already late for school, but I didn't care. After a long period, we all lie down to weep, she was a great glider. My dad also shared the story of what he had heard the night before, he said, "I heard alot of racket.. it sounded like squirrels trying to get in our porch, but had failed. They wanted something." I was heartbroken.. surely, something horrable had happened. But it wasn't until then that I noticed. My screen door was open!! I ran over.. I screamed at myself, "you idiot!! You left it open! She could be out there! She could be dead! She could be eaten" It wasn't until then that I had given up all hope.. and we all went inside to mourn.

A few minutes later, my father went up the stairs to go to the bathroom, and he lifted the lid (yes, it was closed) and there.. there lie a small black fuzz ball! He ran downstairs with a bright smile on his face, with her lying, shivering in his shirt. I screamed in joy and ran over to her. We quickly washed her off.. and blew dried her.. but becuase of the heat, and her being in the toilet for so long, her ears were chipped, so she was left with both ears chipped. This was only a reminder of this sad, but miraculous story.

here is my summory to the story: somehow.. I believe she slid in between our glass doors, I have no idea how.. becuase we even have an alarm that senses everything. And also, that night, I did not sleep in my room (which is downstairs) as normal, but in the upstairs guest bedroom, because I couldn't sleep. The bathroom is right in front of this room. And I think that she was looking for me.. she probally searched my room, and did not see me there. And she hopped up the stairs, and almost made it to me.. but was sidetracted by the water from the toilet.. and squeezed her way inside it.
I am only thankful, that I had more time to spend with her after this time. And if I could.. I would love to have her imput on the story, but I will have to wait, wait until it is my time to be reunited with my little angel.

Wow. Tiki was a remarkable girl. Thank you for sharing your story. I'm sure your parents have been wonderful through your loss. They sound very supportive and I'm glad to hear of their help in the search and recovery. Feel free to send me a message any time you want to talk about Tiki.
I really mean it.

thank you! Yes, Tiki really was our little angel, and we miss her terribly, but what keeps me going on, is the feeling of knowing that I will see her again one day. she's waiting for me to join her, like all my other pets that have and will pass on before me

I believe you are right. In fact, I think we'll even be able to talk to them. Then I can ask the questions only a glider could answer. Like -what is so delicious about my hardcover books?

I honestly believe this isn't the end.

yes! As do I! And I could ask Tiki what made her so interested in marking our piano. Was it cause it smelled funny, or cause it made weird noises?

lol!! Nope, just rubbed on it like a cat rubbing on someone's leg! It was always a site to crack you up
She was a funny lil girl, and we never had a dull moment with her.
Also, she got out alot (she was a sneaky glider) but fortunately, I always knew where to find her, no matter where she was at the time!
The upstairs food closet! it's so bare without her

Bewildered,

I am sorry that I am responding so late to this post but I just read it all. I just wanted to comment that your act of love for this little girl reminds me that there are people in this world that aren't just out for themselves and do really think about what is best for others, be it a glider or a human....

My prayers are with you...

Bewildered, I, too, am slow to read this post. I can't come to this section for very long before I have to move on to other sites and activities. What a truly remarkable glider Tiki was, and what a terrific bond you had with her! Your first story brought so many tears to my eyes, I couldn't see or breathe. Your second story was heartwarming. Thank you for sharing!
