I saw Goldie was hissing/crying when she peed a couple drops last week, so I though must be UTI and brought her in. The results came back from the urinalysis today and everything is normal. I did not see my normal vet and the exam could have been more thorough. I looked her over better myself, and I noticed there was a little scab on her cloaca so I guess the hissing was because of the pain from a cut/scratch, probably from her cage mates or her own nail.

The other thing I saw is that the fur inside her pouch is rusty colored. The skin is pink and healthy. No discharge or anything just discolored fur. Goldie was hand raised and had a wet bottom problem as a joey, her fur became discolored all over her belly and inside her pouch at that time. She is over a year old now and the rest of her fur grew back and is not stained. I don't normally look in her pouch and she is not a breeding glider. Any ideas what could be going on? I am really not sure if her fur has remained discolored all this time or if there is an issue with her pouch now causing the discoloration... had anyone else experienced discolored pouch fur with their handraised babies? How long did it last?

Other things going on with Goldie, she has become agressive with her new cage mate, sometimes food agression, sometimes for no apparent reason. She(?) also overgroomed her tail about 1 inch on the side starting at the base. Fur is thinned in the area, but growing back now. I am worried something is really wrong with my little princess and I don't know what it is. worried She is goiong back to the vet next week, in the meantime I am going to be watching her behavior closely to try to gather more informarion for the vet.

I'm not too familiar with the females anatomy (ie pouch) as to what would be considered a normal color.

I feel that you're doing the best by taking her in to be looked at. I would have them do a 'swab' culture inside of her pouch to check for an infection that possibly could be manifesting deep within her pouch.

I agree with your theory, with the behavior changes, she very well could just not be feeling well.

How old is she? Has she had joeys? Are you planning on breeding her? sorry for all the questions, just trying to get a baseline going here for ya.

Oh Erin, I'm worried about her again! After her last episode I thought everything was getting better! I should be able to call you tommorrow I'll PM you on the details.

I hope everything works out again!

Thanks Linda, Erich.

I was thinking a possible pouch infection too, I am sure that my vet will take a swab and culture to see what he can find.
Is fur discoloration is a sign of a pouch infection? At least if there is something going on there I will have an answer to her behavior as of late. I just want my little girl to be healthy and happy.

Goldie is 1 1/2 years old. She has never been bred, nor will she. She is from a sterile line. She was VERY sick as a joey but has been in great health until recently when I have become worried with her behavior and other symptoms. The sisters pouch fur is creamy white just like the rest of her belly fur. Both girls were handraised but Mia did not get sick like Goldie.

Goldie had attacked the males in her colony before the SGGA. I kept her alone for a time before putting her with her half sister. They got along great until about a week ago the fighting started.

Pouch fur discoloration is not necessarily unusual, even in non breeding females. If it is something you have suddenly noticed, it would be worthwhile to have the vet check it, though.

Females will clean their pouches (and also have scent glands in their pouch) - that trapped moisture can cause discoloration in the pouch fur and make it a rust color. Much like gliders that sleep in nest boxes will often get a reddish/rust colored tinge to their fur.

Just to make sure I went in and checked Maia's pouch. She is two years old and has never bred, and she has rust colored fur in her pouch also. You can't see it if she is keeping her pouch closed (the pouch opening is made up of muscles that they can control).

If the color is beyond the pouch (i.e. there is obvious staining around the pouch opening, not just inside the pouch), there is discharge from the pouch, and/or the skin is an angry inflamed red instead of the healthy pink it normally is, then it definitely needs to be checked out for bacterial/fungal infection. thumb
