are steril gliders the same as unnuertured gliders? will they still try and mate with a female? would you be able to have 2 steril males in with a female or will they still be aggresive?

thanks smile

I have two sterile males, both still tried to mate with their females. I had one male neutered and they now live together with two females. The neutered male no longer tries to mate with the females. If you plan to combine two sterile males with a female, I would suggest having one or both males neutered. The sterile males might fight when the female is in heat otherwise.

I have a sterile glider and he does mate with his cage mate, or atleast tries. Since I only have one that is sterile I do not have an answer about two sterile gliders with a female.

There is a difference between "sterile" and "neutered".

"Sterile" implies that the sperm is not viable, and therefore the male cannot impregnate the female. However, they still have their testes, and therefore have testosterone and other hormones which will biologically tell them to mate with the females, even if the sperm isn't viable.

"Neutered" implies that the testes have been removed and therefore the hormones produced by the testes are no longer available to biologically tell the male to mate, and the sperm are no longer available to impregnate the female.

(I have seen neutered males in other types of animals attempt to mate, but obviously without any testes producing sperm, they can't successfully impregnate a female.)

I would seperate the males from the female...they may injure her or one another. Do they have their bald spots? If they are neutered, the majority of their bald spot fills in...you can still see it a little but not like an intact male.

Do they have poms? If so, check for flatness or roundness. You can very gently touch the pom to see if they are intact. If they have a very noticeable bald spot on their head and dark coloring on their chest from their chest gland, they are not neutered. Even neutered males tho, can and will try to mate and go thru the act of mating. If they're fighting over the mom, I would definitely remove the son, as the mom and dad are a bonded pair. You may be able to put him back after being separated for approx 5 days. It sounds like mom is in heat and both males are fighting over her. They can and will hurt each other seriously and possibly fatally.

To be on the safe side of things, I would separate the males from the female until her heat cycle passes. Keep track of the date, and watch her cycle to begin every 28 days, which lasts for 3-5 days.

It does sound like momma's in heat, so it'd be best to separate the son from her and the dad.

Do you know when the son was neutered? If it hasn't been long, he might still have the drive to mate. I think it takes about a month for the testosterone and other hormones to be flushed out, but not sure on the exact time frame. Also, bald spots often take several months to completely go away.

Please keep in mind that not all neutered males will stop trying to mate. A lot of times, the older ones will keep trying, so be prepared to separate them every time the mom comes in heat, get another glider so you can separate them permanently and him not be alone, or to rehome the son.
