I am not 100% sure if its ok to boil up a egg and just crack the heck out of the shell and put it in the cage for the gliders? I would assume this would be great for entertainment along with health. Anyone do this? How many full boiled eggs can you pop into a cage on a weekly basis?

I wouldn't do this. You can give them boiled egg as an occasional treat but not the eggshell. It would be too hard on their insides, esp their bladder and kidneys. It would have very sharp edges.

The edge of an egg shell is pretty sharp. I've gotten the equivalent of paper cuts peeling them. Even if I don't get cut my finger tips are usually quite sore after peeling a lot of eggs. Dunno what gliders would think. I doubt they'd eat any of it and probably just peel it off. Powdered egg shell could be useful since it is nearly all calcium but I'd want to be measuring it out and like I said they probably wouldn't eat chunks of shell. It's too hard and sharp.

We also have to remember that in the wild, they eat bird eggs. I am quite sure pieces of it must enter their system.

I don't give eggs with shells, but personally, I don't believe it will cause harm.

If anyone here has ever been bitten by a glider, they know how sharp their teeth are, so I am sure they can handle an egg shell.

They also eat live baby birds and small rodents and lizards in the wild, therefore, small bones should not be a problem either. They are equiped to handle it.

A bird egg is a heck of a lot thinner shell and less sharp edge than a chicken egg. By a lot. I've hatched wild birds and I keep quail. They have tougher membranes underneath to allow for less shell so they can lay a larger egg in comparison to their body size without depleting all their calcium and minerals. Chickens were bred to lay as many eggs as possible with thick shells to keep them from breaking for human use and they are fed feeds with extra calcium beyond what wild birds could find in order to make up for it. I give quail eggs still in the shell to my pets all the time and never even think about it because they are literally paper thin.

I've never feed mine eggs with shells on but I do boil my eggs for HPW and drop them in the blender shell and all ~ hoping to boost the calcium ratio. They are absolutely pulverized but I check through each batch anyway ~ since they are not used to having the shells I don't want anyone to inhale one accidently.

This is what I wrote in the thread that Kristy linked to:

I usually peel a little bit of the shell off, so they can try what's in there & by morning, they have about 1/3 - 1/2 of the egg eaten & then I throw it away. I believe they eat bird eggs in the wild. I've never seen my gliders have a problem choking on the shells.

As a side-note, I don't give this to them very often. I feed the HPW diet, which already has eggs in it & I don't like to go overboard on the cholesterol.

Like I said, I'm not an expert on it & I don't do it very often, but I have done it. And when I have, I would say I don't think the gliders really ate much or any of the shell. Generally it ends up looking like they peeled some away & ate about 1/3 of the egg. I think it's kind of fun for them to have to work for their food like they would in the wild. I wouldn't feed them a raw egg like they might eat in the wild, but I think it's ok to give them a hard-boiled egg every now & then.
