#925763 - 04/01/10 03:37 PM 3 mo. and chewing everything

Have a 3 month old little boy (along with mom and dad) and he is chewing everything!!! I had a bendy branch but he was chewing on that...so out it went. Now in terms if brances I only have the wooden perch in there that came with my cage and I just noticed he's chewing that too - he even chews on the fleece bridge (the kind with lots of fleece strips hanging off it) -
I'm assuming this is a stage because of his age (didn't mean to rhyme lol) - but at this rate there will be nothing left in their cage:)
What's a girl to do? Should i try bitter apple or something? He's fed plenty (hpw) and dosn't start this until after he's done eating -
Thoughts?

With some gliders that are sudden chewers (and severe chewers) there are teeth/mouth problems that may be causing them pain, so they chew to put pressure on their teeth - similar to why babies and puppies chew during teething. So you may want to have your vet check them over to be sure there isn't a mouth problem.

On the other hand, some gliders just chew more than others. If you have a chewer like this, it is best to stick to more natural things for them to chew on - like branches. They will probably really like fresh cut branches, so if you have any safe woods around you (from places that don't spray pesticides) they will like to strip the bark.

If they are chewing on fleece strips, I would take them out because they may choke if they get small pieces off.

Thanks Gretchen - but what i'm wondering is if because he's only 3 months old is it possible teething, or maybe him starting his terrible twos? What he's doing with those fleece strips is pulling, like tug-o-war.
I can't really saw it's sudden as he's still a baby - know what I mean?

I was drawing a comparison with teething, but gliders do not teeth like us, cats or dogs (that we see them) they come OOP with their full set of 'adult' teeth.

Gliders will often go through a 'crabby phase', it depends on the glider as to what age, how long and how severe it will be. They may be a little more cranky with their family, including you. Some people think this is an instinctual behavior from the wild so that young leave the colony avoiding inbreeding. Honestly, I don't know if that is remotely close to the truth or not, but have experienced a change in attitude with almost all my gliders between about 3-6 months OOP.

BUT, increased chewing behaviors may not be related. There have been instances of young gliders with severe teeth/mouth infections, so I still think it would be worthwhile to have his mouth checked and make sure that this is just a behavior, not a result of pain he is experiencing.
