Well, I know that it's not so much the freezing that damages the food, although freezing does affect the texture afterwards seeing as freezing causes water to expand which breaks cell walls (thanks for the reminder on that one Dr. Bruce), etc. Not to mention fruits and veggies that are placed in the freezer still do spoil! The decaying process, though slower, will still occurs in your freezer.

I think while the fruits and veggies are defrosting you lose certain nutrients. Percentages of the water-soluble nutrients including Vitamin C, niacin, folic acid, and the Vitamin B series are lost through water that leeches from the fruits/veggies when they thaw.

It's not so bad with things like the BML (which starts off frozen then is allowed to thaw as the night progresses) because the water that seeps out of the BML during defrosting remains in the fairly uniform BML mixture and is slurped up with everything else. In a bowl of fruits and veggies that are allowed to thaw, however, I'd expect there to be left-over water, and that water contains some of the stuff the glider need!

Having said that, I've offered veggies and fruits frozen before, but sometimes nothing beats the flavour, feel, smell, and look of fresh fruit and vegetables, even if you disregard the nutritional demerit.

Thank you for the replies...

I was concerned as my two only want to eat the mixed frozen veggies and of course I got thinking about the difference in nutritional values. I have read a few reports since posting this and have discovered that frozen fruits and veggies don't loose many nutrients at all.

I find out more about it when I have more time...

a side note- I use frozen mixed with fresh and vary it all, but I have found they eat all the liquid too.. lap it right up, so they are still getting the nutrition from the frozen, but thats because I make sure to offer it all..

my boys eat just about everything in their veggie bowl when its frozen! but whenever i offer fresh i always find LOTS of leftovers. i guess i would rather have them eat more than to get a little more vitamins.

According to the vet from suncoast you should always use fresh. Personally I use both.

All my veggies are offered frozen, too, but and I mix it directly into the BML.

I use frozen a lot because I can afford to buy fresh and yet give a variety. For two gliders that is a LOT of trips to the store and a lot of waste. I give fresh when i have some but it is not an everyday thing.

WOW! Just take a look at this, I tried to find the closest match:

Looks like frozen loses quite a bit of nutrients... hmmmm.

Darn! I can't get this to work right, but if you go to this site
http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/

Do a search on one particuar veggie, do one search on the fresh and another search on the frozen....... and the same portion, you'll see what I mean. The nutrients just disappear on the frozen products... sorry I can't post what I found...

cycy,
I couldn't see anything on the links

But, from the few papers and articals I read they said that frozen and fresh had almost the same nutritional values. I also read that if and when fruits & veg are let get over ripe that they start to lose value and in that suitation frozen is better.

Just like anything to do with diets there is never a clear answer . If I get time later I'll try pull up what I found and post it.

Okay, thanks Lorna!
If you go to the site I posted right above your post, do a search, the numbers are awesome. I do feed all fresh fruits, but mostly frozen veggies out of convenience more than anything else.

Sorry I couldn't get that post to work... silly website!
