I took a glider to the vet today. She came to me with HLP last week and went in for her second round of shots. The vet gave her more than the suggested amount of Vit D. The poor thing is miserable! I took her back and am now giving her saline injections to try to flush her system. Any suggestions on what to do now? Anybody got a number to a vet who has dealt with this before?

i had a real bad scare earlier. she wouldn't eat or drink and refused to move. her breathing became labored so i rushed her in again, this time with my normal vet. she got a tiny dose of steroids which helped with the breathing. That was several hours ago. she will eagerly drink apple juice from a syringe now. i have the vet's cell no. in case i need it tonight or over the weekend. what actually happened was the 2nd vet misread the chart. i feel bad for the 2nd vet. she cried and cried when she figured out what happened and begged me to keep her posted over the weekend. right now, my priority is to make this little girl pee as much as possible as fast as i can so the stuff gets out of her system. i will post if there are any changes.

sorry about type--i only have 1 hand. the other is now a bed.

She made it through the night. At 4 am, she was starting to try to move around. Now, her urine is really yellow from the vitamin D, but otherwise, she is acting normal. Who knew a sugar glider could ever survive this! The dose she received was ten times of what she should have had! This has been quite the bonding experience for both my husband and myself. She is so forgiving that she even loved on everyone at the vet's office today! Prior to this, my husband was not very interested in my gliders. He generously offered to administer the shots, and now he is just as adicted to suggies as I am.

Another update: The poor thing started to SM the injection site, so she is now in an e-collar. I would have posted an update for you sooner, but had to make sure that she was taken cae of first. She is now on antibiotics and butt cream. I am having to clean her rear end regularly to keep it free of urine and fecal matter. Wheeee!!! The things we do for our babies.

Some of you may remember my stories. I had a resue to come into my home who had been living in a small glass aquarium set up for a reptile. She had been on a horrible diet and had HLP. I took her straight to the vet who gave her calcium and vitamin D shots. A week later, I returned for a second round. The vet misread the information and gave her ten times the dose of vitamin D that she should have. My husband became attached to her at that point and named her Toots. Shortly after the overdose, Toots began to SM and had to be put into an e-collar. She became extremely depressed and refused to eat or drink. A total of 6 visits to the vet were made within a 12 day period, the latest being earlier today. They kept her all day, but I took her home because there is no staff at the office at night and I knew that she was in critical condition and did not want her to cross over to the rainbow bridge alone. My instincts were correct. Toots passed away in my arms at 11:01 pm. Nothing can describe the feeling you have when you are holding such a sweet little girl in your hands and watch her take her last breath in this world. My daughter was there with us. The mistake made by the vet was one that anyone could have made, and I don't have any hard feelings toward her. She cried along with me when she realized what had happened. She has earned a great deal of respect from me because not only did she admit to me that she had messed up, she did everything to help correct the problem. I know that I did everything I could and I know that for at least her last few days on this earth, Toots got to experience what it was like to be loved and held.

I can't think of a better human friend for Toots to have had her final days. Hopefully she is at peace now.

She knew love with your family and crossed quietly over the Rainbow Bridge in the warmth and love of your arms. May you find comfort knowing she felt love in your home.

You experience with Toots can help other gliders who may have the misfortune of experiencing the same thing in the future. Mistakes happen and while this was a big mistake, learning can take place from it.

Please gather all the documents about this and send them on to the Sugar Group. They gather information about different medical situations with gliders. The Sweet Spot is a board dedicated to medical issues and posting about Toot's situation there could potentially help other gliders in the future as well.

This is a very hard and very sad situation to have to learn from and I'm very sorry for your loss. Please gather and share your documentation (and that from the vet if they will write up the experience from their point of view) in hopes that Toots will go on to help other gliders as well.

Again, I'm very sorry for your loss. Glide free little Toots.

I want to thank everyone for their support through this very difficult time.

I went to the vet's office to tell the doctor myself. It was very important to me to let her know that I have a great deal of respect and appreciation for her. I respect her in that she had the courage to tell me that she had messed up. I appreciate her because she did everything in her power to try to help my baby recover. She rejoiced with me on the good days and cried with me on the bad days. I have just as many of her tears on my shoulder as she has of mine on her shoulder.

The cause of death was liver failure due to the overdose. Her bladder also failed her. For her, death was a release from the cruel life that she lived. She only had a brief time at the end when she finally felt love and I believe that she embraced it for all that she had. Her death was a learning experience and brought me and the vet extremely close so she did not die in vain. Her lessons and her memory will live on in our hearts forever.

I believe that out of every tradgey comes hope for the future. The biggest ray of hope that I believe will come out of this is the fact that through the 2 short weeks Toots and I shared together, I have made a life-changing decision. I have decided to change my major and persue a career in veterinary medicine and continue on to become a specialist in exotic animals.
