#94358 - 04/11/06 09:19 PM another mealworm ?

every since I started not refrigerating my mealies they dont move around alot, they move around but not as much as I would have though... do they "sleep" a lot during the day?

#94359 - 04/11/06 09:35 PM Re: another mealworm ? [Re: ]

I think they do sleep or else are just inactive.

I remember the first time I took a large tub of mealies out of the fridge to feed... I had them in a ziplock container and came back several hours later to check on them...I thought they were all dead and that I suffocated them by not making the air holes big enough . So I put them back in the fridge to wait for hubby to come home and dispose of them... low and behold they were still alive and wriggeling after they warmed back up.

I have no clue as to what really happened... some of the mealie experts will be along to fill us in.

as for the worms... i think once the get worm the settle down.. unless food is available... when the caome out of the fridge and start to warm up i think of it like a bit of a shock... i keep a small cup with worms in the glider room for whenever... and after thay have been out for a bit they settle down...

Some of mine right out of the fridge take about 5 to 10 minutes to warm up and some just lay there… and some of the ones that are in my farms are less active than others.
For the ones out of the fridge, I would presume that the shock would be the reason, as John says, but for the ones that are in the farms, they slow down right before they go through the molting stage, then they get really active afterwards, they shed that hard layer and grow into their new exoskeleton, which at first is really soft, and of lighter color....
[:"blue"] they’re just all creepy to me, what lengths we go to for our little spoilt suggies!! BRATS! [/]

If you keep mealies in the fridge I think it just shuts their systems down due to the cold. If you leave them out inbetween and have them on a bed of oats with repcal sprinkled on they will eat which will make them bigger. A lot of people keep them in the fridge so they dont wriggle as much so are easier to feed.

#94363 - 04/12/06 12:06 PM Re: another mealworm ? [Re: ]

I have my own mealie farm which is what I was asking about... I have just started one and of the 1000 mealies I ordered are in the alien stage right now and I think they will all be turning that way in the next few weeks.

If you are letting 1000 mealies morph, you are going to end up with so many that you won't know what to do with them! I let 500 morph and I think I now have close to 50,000 mealies in all assorted sizes.
Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance

I would recommend starting with 100 or 200... THAT's alot of mealies!

So if you don't want morphing, but you want to keep them alive as long as there a way?

I've had my mealworms (or at least some of them) since the first of November - I ordered 1,000 from Grubco. I have them in a plastic container (with holes in the top) with some regular oatmeal in the frig. I get them out every week or so, place a damp paper towel, piece of lettuce or cabbage on top of them and let them sit out for 12 to 24 hours to feed. After that I remove what's left of the towel, lettuce or cabbage and return them to the frig. Don't know that that's the best way to do it, but it's worked for me and I still have plenty of mealworms to feed Stryder.
