#95610 - 04/17/06 08:39 AM seizure!!

i've read before somewhere that gliders do experience some kind of seizure/convulsion..can anyone tell me how does it look like? my glider has been acting on a little strange today.. this afternoon all of a sudden she just kept very quiet..i was giving her a treat..and then she just kept still and was just staring straight..she doesn't sniff on the treat i gave her or look at me.. and then when i pet her she just like went to sleep..without much reaction.. usually she would sniff at my hand when i want to pet her or reach into the pouch.. she does tremble but usually she does that when i try to touch her.. she;s just acting like in a trance or something... can anyone advise me on the situation? thank you

I myself have never experienced a glider siezure, but I have on a rare occasion or two seen them in the 'trance' you are talking about. One will do this when the other is barking or if they think they are in danger, like a defence reaction...If I don't move it can't see me...

My advice is that if you are worried and suspect something more to take her to the vet for a check up. Have you noticed any more bahaviour changes: loss of apatite etc.

Sorry I couldn't have be of more help, someone will be along soon..

I have had a glider seize on me and it was a scary sight to see! Angel, my glider, was a rescue and one day, out of the blue, seized. Her legs and arms were all outstretched, and her body was rocking back and forth sideways. She also was in a trance. Once her seizure passed, she was fine. I took her to the vet and the vet could not find anything wrong with her. I hate to say this, but a few months later she crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge.

Please, please take your glider to the vet. I realize that you may have a hard time finding a glider-knowledgable vet in Malaysia, but a vet is better than none. Please get your glider checked out.

Please keep us updated.

My Gizmo experienced a seizure too...he went into a trance-like state right before it happened, then his body started twitching and convulsing....usually if they space out before a seizure, their pupils become dialated and when they're actually having the seizure, if you look closely, you can see their eyes move rapidly back and forth....other symptoms of seizures are lethargy and lack of response to stimuli (i.e. you talking to her, touching her...)....keep us updated!

i can't find any vets here now.. so i'm waiting til tomoro.. i didn't see that she was twitching or anything like drastic.. i pet her, and she just put her head down and went to sleep.. she is eating now if i give her bml on my fingers..and she seems hungry to lick all off my finger and she's playing now.. can it be considered a seizure if it is just lack of response like how i mentioned? thank you so much for the advise..will keep you all updated.. thanks!!

It may be possible she heard something that alarmed her, that you could not hear. My gliders will 'Freeze' occasionally, dissinterested in treats. Generally it means I have to clean the ionic air purifier. It makes a snap, that only my gliders, ferret, and I can hear. Mike is just oblivious to anything but rock concert noise.

Of course, if you can, it is better to be safe then sorry and check with a vet.

Yep, gliders do stand very still at times like they are listening intently to something. She may have just been sleepy and when you started petting her, she felt safe and comfy enough to fall asleep.

That description sounded like a seizure. In some types, the victim might just stare. Other times just twitching. Grand mal activity is the rhythmic total body jerking we usually think of. After the spell, they often sleep a short while. An hour later they may be totally normal.

The seizure isn't too worrisome all by itself. And just a seizure alone may not hurt anything if it is self-limited as you described. But what caused the seizure may or may not be a serious situation. That is why the vet check is key.

Here is a link about seizures.

Good luck.

I would go with schlep's advice..he knows what he's doing. And if she refused a treat when that is out of character for her, I would be suspicious as well-any time a glider acts abnormally for them is time for a vet check as they hide illness so well and by the time you know for sure it is often too late with these guys. Always better to be safe, than sorry. I'm sure schlep or someone will correct me if I'm wrong, or off base, but here are the tests I would have the vet look at for possible seizure activity:

fecals-(float & smear both to check for parasite or bacterial infection)

urine-(cytology plus panel to see how much sugars, proteins, etc, are in the urine, and if anything shows up that should not be in there)

blood panel-which will give white/red blood cell counts, iron levels, sugar levels, tell about liver/kidney function, etc., etc. Blood can tell a whole lot and reveal things the other tests can't-and seizures can have a range of causes.

Keep us updated on your girl.

i took her to the vet.. and they say there's nothing wrong with her.. i don't know what else to do.. but these 2 days.. she hasn't been eating much.. and tonight she hasn't come out much and her food had been thrown alot on the floor.. what should i do??

#95620 - 04/20/06 02:23 PM Re: seizure!! [Re: ]

Was the vet able to run any of the tests that Jen (Xfilefan) suggested?

With her showing mutiple signs of illness I would really try to find a way to get a diagnosis of what is going on.

Are there any other vets in your area that you could take your glider to if this vet isn't able to help you out?

Good luck

#95621 - 04/20/06 08:49 PM Re: seizure!! [Re: ]

Having "nothing wrong with her" is a good thing. Some of the causes of a seizure you really don't want to have. (Meningitis, brain tumor, stroke, sepsis, blood clot, bad heart rhythm, severe metabolic derangement, etc.) It is not very emotionally satisfying to not have answers or feel that dollars expended didn't get you anywhere. But ruling out bad things is what you want.

Some seizures are idiopathic, meaning no identifiable cause. (Some say jokingly Idiopathic = [:"red"] path[/]ology present, the [:"red"] idio[/]t doctor can't find it.) In that case, the seizures occur and no treatable cause needs to be addressed. They are often self-limited and do no damage.

Be glad nothing serious was found. Think through how to respond if one occurs again. Good luck.

The Virginia Opposum will play dead when it feels threatened. Thus the old saying "playing possum". Chickens will also do this. Maybe there is some realationship between the sugar glider and the American opposum. The 'playing possum' by some sugar gliders could be the reason for the Aussies misnaming sugar gliders flying possums.
