My mommy glider is probably going to have her foot taken off next week. She has a joey IP that is not due out for a couple more weeks, my vet thinks the joey is older than what I actually think. I noticed today that his tail is starting to turn gray. So that may help someone as far as a time schedule of hold the baby is. This is her and mine first baby so I'm not real sure. Anyway the vet was wanting to hold off on taking her foot as long as possible because of the joey. He said that when he sedates her that the joey probably wouldn't make it. Has anyone been through this?

[:"blue"] Alisha,
I am so sorry you are having to go through this. I don't have any experience whatsoever with a joey this young, but hopefully someone will come along shortly. [/]

[:"blue"] I'm sure that someone has probably come across this situation however it is the weekend and our traffic flow here is usually down on weekends.

Moderator Judie may know something about this, but I do know that she is out of town this weekend. [/]

Your baby should be oop soon, I think within the week. I had babies come out that were still pink, and before I knew it they were gray and their eyes were even open. With one joey, she will more than likely keep it in the pouch longer, or will want to. Keep checking, of course the more bonded you are the easier it's going to be to see when the joey unlatches. It shouldn't be too long tho. I'd say a week. I'll shoot sheila an email as well to let her know about your situation.

My biggest worry is the sedative will go through the mom's milk to the joey. Do you know if this is the vet's concern? If the joey does come OOP, does anyone know if she can supplement for a day or so, or would the joey be too young? This I am unfamiliar with, since we have not had joey's...yet.

I'm not really sure if it's the sedation he's worried about or the stress it's going to put her under. I've tried to wait as long as we could to do anything this serious with her foot but I don't think it's going to be safe for mommy if I wait much longer.

Ok here are some pictures I took of babies 10 days before they were actually oop. Do they look like this or is there more color?

The joeys are able to be detached from the nipple after 40 days IP, so the vet might forcably remove and incubate the joey during the surgery and then place the joey back in after the surgery once she has passed the sedative through her system. If she rejects it then you will have to hand rear it. This would be safer than risking the joey exposure to the sedative. Do you have the father? During the procedure I would recommend placing the joeys with him. He will keep the joey warm and continue stimulating it to deficate and urinate. You will need to feed the joey every 1-2 hours during the procedure.

Karin, yes, she should be able to supplement for a day or two, but would need to get baby back to mom asap. She would have to feed it every 2 hours round the clock. She needs to answer Sheila, so we can determine how close to oop they are.

His tail looks alot like the one in the picture as far as color and length. We think ours is a little bigger. I'm not sure of color anywhere else. I haven't seen his full body in about a week and a half. We think he sliped out of the pouch then but didn't detach. I had him due OOP on Oct 8th but my vet thinks he is older than that. Like I said this was my first baby and wasn't exactly sure what I was looking for.

Yes I have the daddy. He has been to the vet visits and everything with the mommy. I won't seperate them unless I just have too. They was raised together and I've had them since they were about 3 months old. Thank all of you for your advice on all my problems with her. I would have probably pulled all of my hair out by now if it wasn't for ya'll.

What do I need to supplement the baby with. I can't get Rep-Cal vitamin with D3 any where around me and I can't get it from Shelia quick enough. The pet store told me that they can't get rep-cal with d3 and that they have quit making it. I have everything for the bml except that. Any other suggestions?

[:"blue"] Glider Greetings, Alisha:

It would appear that your pet store is fibbing to you. I just checked the Rep-Cal Web site and they are still showing the calcium with D3. I think it highly unlikely that the product would be discontinued yet left on the Web site!!!!

I'm on the phone with Judie and she says they can sedate the mom with the joey in pouch, and not take the bayb from mom, and try to supplement it. I would wait approx 10 days, and see where the joey is. If you don't already have all the stuff to handfeed, then, let the vet go ahead, leaving the joey with mom, it should be fine. I would have your vet call Dr. Bradley if he/she has ANY QUESTIONS at all
Judie has had a mom with joeys ip be anesthetized and the joeys were fine. It's difficult at best to try to hand feed/supplement the joey, let mom take care of it, and it should be fine.

Thanks for all of your help. I'm giving her foot a couple more days before I take her back to the vet. I have to consult with the vet over the phone several times a week. So if I tell him something that he is really concerned about he'll tell me to bring her in. It was raining so hard this morning that I just called him and told him that I would bring her in when the storms passed.

I'm going with Chey and Judie on leaving the baby in pouch for this. Reason being was that when my female Mattie was very sick and we couldn't figure out what it ws, she was "put under" for a blood test only to find out she had joey's in pouch. My wonderful, spoiled rotten Princess Alli being one. These babies were no where near their oop date, didn't even make a "lump" in the pouch yet, and did fine for as little time as she was under. I would think an older joey, even in pouch, has a good chance of being ok. Good luck, and I am sorry she is losing the foot.

When we came home tonight she was actually using it a bit. The anti-biotics maybe finally doing something. I'm going to take a closer look tonight when I give her medicine. She don't seem to be biteing it as much so maybe she is starting to get over. Although I'm not getting my hopes up. The last time it got better she took a nose dive on me and it got alot worse. I'll give ya'll an update tomorrow. My joey was waving at me earlier. It's so cute.
